New to forum. Would like to pull radio and have it checked out.
Station seem to be coming in by indicator light.(stock AM/FM) Want is best way to remove? My the way, have learned many things from you all.
Merry Xmas. Glassman74
If memory serves correctly, then you have to pull out the entire gague cluster to get at 2 bolts holding the stereo in place, and its a royal pain in the a$$ if your alone for the re-install, and just so you know, if you forget to plug something back in, it might be a year and a half before you get to it again (telling from experiance, still havent gotten back to it) its was just a pain for me

Thanks. Will try to have extra hands and good eyes around.I'm going on 67, and eyes need help.
its really not that bad ,remove both side trim pieces in front of console then remove 6 or 8 screws in sides of guage panel ,then 3 or 4 top screws where wiper switch is then reach under console and remove 2 nuts holding guage panel to lower console then remove radio ***** then nuts holding radio, 1 r/s bracket, back of radio to trans hump, should be able to tilt gauge bezel out and up to remove radio it doesn;t need to come all the way out .just enough to clear radio ,good luck ,p/s be very careful with gauge bezel they are very fragle
When I got my '73, the radio would turn on and if I turned it up all the way, I could just barely hear the music. The speakers in the dash were bad. Replaced them and all is good now.
Good luck.

Sound like the same deal with my 74 radio. The STEREO light comes on when it hits a station, but no sound at all. I thought about just checking the plugs etc.... from the radio to the "amp box" ... to the speakers .... and under the passenger side dash.
Let me know if you get yours to work!
And by the way....Merry Christmas everyone!

NO SOUND.WILL TRY PLUGGING IN EXT. SPEAKERS TO CK. RADIO.
HOW HARD TO REPLACE STOCK SPEAKERS?
THANKS GLASSMAN74
Just a suggestion - when I pulled the radio on my '75, I took pictures of each step...then I projected them on the wall in my garage in reverse order as I put the radio back in. That way I didn't leave any wires unplugged or have a problem knowing where each screw and interior piece went.

also , there's one screw under the wiper switch after you remove it, and watch the thin plactic oil pressure hose, it is very fragile, and hooked to the back of the oil pressure gauge.
im sort of in the middle of the same thing with my 70. The previous owner of the car never finished the interior so alot of things were missing, and now that i am putting it all back together it is getting a little confusing. If someone could clear up some misunderstandings on the two bolts at the front that would be great. Do they bolt UP into the radio? And also how does the guage cluster bolt to the lower centre console?
Thanks
I don't know what bolts your talking about, the radio is attatched by a nut on each of it's tuning shafts and one nut on it's right side stud, see arm near Antenna wire, that's it. The gauge cluster bolts to the center consol by the two studs pictured above, a nut on each, last thing, through the side access plates. I left mine off, they can be a bit of a PITA to get on.
I'm putting a new radio and new dash speakers in my 71. The yellow power wire leading to the radio coming from the black-taped 1/2" bundle of wires (harness) has something spliced into it. It's a winding within a metal frame about 1" x 1" in size. Can anyone tell me what it is and is it necessary to keep it? My old stock radio didn't work, if that helps???
Thanks.
Since it is a stereo radio, the final stage amp (called a convector) is separate from the radio and is mounted under the dash behind the right-side dash panel. If you have no sound, either the transistors on the convector are bad; other components on the convector are bad; the wiring to the convector is bad; the speakers are bad. The least likely component to be defective is the radio head itself. The capacitors in the head could be 'noisy' but that's about it unless the main board has a short, etc. Try the 'speaker exchange'; then check out the wiring; then check out the transistors on the convector. If none of that fixes it, you will need to send the head and convector to a reputable refurb. outfit.

How do you know/how can I know it is a stereo radio? It is AM/FM and it does have two speakers, but if it's suppose to have the convector, someone before me took it. The old radio I'm taking out does have a recessed female circular plug on the backside, near the power plug that's located on the driver's side.
It may be a "noise filter" to clean up the electrical noise from your alternator or plug wires.
Thanks. Durango_boy thought the same until he saw a picture of it. He thinks I better throw it away. Here's a picture of it. By the way, my radio expects a direct battery connection, a connection to the ignition and one to ground. Can you tell me which is which with the yellow and gray wires? I'm assuming the black is ground. Thanks.
Sorry for failed picture post. How do I post a pic that I have on my hard drive?

The stereo radio has the little light (1/8" round window with light) for indicating stereo "signal level"; the AM/FM does not. The radios appear the same except for that. Both have a convector; the stereo version has TWO power transistors, the AM/FM has one. If yours has no convector, there is no way to get any sound. Check on eBay or contact someone in the refurb business. It appears that a PO tried to put it back to stock with a radio but didn't know what he/she needed to get it up and running.
