"Q: I am a diehard 69 Camaro enthusiast..as well as a owner.. but I've never seen in all my years a million+ dollar Camaro. COPO or not. The Barrett-Jackson...more Jan-02-08
A: Sir, Review the sale last weekend. Car #51 sold for 986,500.00 with the fees included. Now do you have anything else to add? "
Has anyone seen the history of that car! That car has been all cut up and had a roll cage. Was race approx. 7 yrs. It might be #'s matching ( I didn't check), but I guarantee you that it does not have the original engine! This car is not worth much to me and has lost most of its collector value in my eyes just because it was cut up and then later "corrected". Who knows on how good of a job they did to "correct" it. I think it will have a hard time selling. I don't have 1-1/4 mil just laying around for a car. If I buy a car, it will be a car I can enjoy. That car is only good to look at for that price! I wouldn't even pay that kind of money for the Corvette ZL-1's (if I had the money of course)!
his car has been discussed several times over at team camaro and i think he paid around 800,000 for it and i have seen it on ebay 3-4 times in the past 4-5 yrs i dont think it has sold yet.
There were only 69 ZL1 camaros produced in 69 so they are very rare and well documented if its real so???
would i pay that even if i had millions lying around? NO

So, is this a perfect example of why cars are not good investments?
No description really needed. The vin is posted, and by the pictures a correct rotisserie restoration. We can assume the car is a #1 to #2+ condition.
Based on the car with verifyable history and condition, what is a fathom green 69 ZL-1 worth?
There were 69 ZL-1's and of those one car was a Rally Sport, in silver. This car is owned by Keith Jackson of Barrett Jackson, and is perhaps the best optioned ZL-1. This is a million dollar ZL-1. The Corvette ZL-1 is worth???? WHo knows.
The recent sales of ZL-1 Camaros are at the 600-800K level. Hemi cars are sliding (possibly). The proof is going to be Barrett Jackson, R&M and Gooding this year, for the initial look at 2008. Remember that last year was a rough year for the sellers, with most cars that were professionally restored selling for the price of the restoration only. Most of those cars were literally "free" to the buyers.
The price is a bit out of the ballpark for now, as a Hugger Orange or Riverside Gold ZL-1 is a bit more saleable...But nothing top doolar is saleable 2 weeks before Scottsdale.
Jim has made quite a buisness out of selling Camaro parts and Camaros for much more than the "going price". There are buyers out there that will pay more just to have it "right now" rather than dig and search all over the place for that ellusive and rare original center fuel guage or the numbers correct shifter linkage etc. Buy high and sell even higher is what he has done. Not a bad deal as long as both the buyer and the seller are happy. That car is probably very nice and if someone wants to buy it at that price they will probably be pleased with it.
I don't need anything from Jim and wouldn't buy from him if I did. There are lots of people in the Camaro community that have had less than happy transactions with him and would rather source parts from elsewhere. If you have been into Camaros for a long time you hear a lot about who is good to deal with and who is not. He isn't the only prominant Camaro guy out there with a bad rap but he is on a short list.
No. It won't sell for that much on eBay. People with that kind of money don't use eBay to buy big $$ items...their authenticity can't be verified or assured by eBay. Also, if it were "real", the owner would have contacted Barrett-Jackson. A "legitimate" vehicle like that would draw big buck$ there, as it would already be drawing the money crowd. If the owner puts it on eBay, it is likely a clone.

He screwed up not taking it to Barret-Jackson. From a previous post, someone said that some have had a bad experience dealing with this guy. Maybe I was right? Maybe he didn't do a good job of making it "correct" after the car was hacked up by some racer.
Anyone in their right mind would know that if there is good money to be made it will be a barret-jackson. Alot more than what your going to get from ebay, anyway. However, if I am not mistaken, the cars have to be thoroughly inspected before the are allowed to be auctioned off. Does he have something to hide?
The car is probably real but the price is of course ridiculous.
Some people have issues with the history of these individual cars (how much of the original car remains) but in reality there are only just 69 of them out there and the market is driven by the qualified buyers, not "experts".
IMHO - You can drive the crap out of them. If it breaks, rebuild it. The price is still ridiculous even if it has been rebuilt. They are still all worth a ton of money to the right buyer regardless of the history because of the rarity.
Off topic a bit, but BJ has earned a bad rep for dropping the hammer early to friends and/or cars ending up in Craig Jackson's personal collection. I dont know it there are actual conspiracies on this, but I have heard of someone that this happened to...the friend of a friend deal. They dropped the hammer in less than a minute. It has gotten so bad, that they made a special episode of the BJ coverage that is being shown on the speed channel that addresses the allegations. Of course the show makes it sound like all the allegations are unfounded and that all of the complainers are crazy. I would think that their timing for showing these is not coincidental either.
Most people, me included, use ebay as a marketing tool, not with the intent of actually making a sale. Its the cheapest internet advertisement out there. It is virtually unlimited text and pictures for 7 days that reaches the entire world. Many deals are made after the ebay auction ends. I think that ebay recognizes this because they now charge a flat fee for cars without a percentage fee if it sells.
Just a guess, but with economists using the "R" word (recession) look for a buyers market with lower prices this year (There, I did it, we'll see how right I am in a few days). /:\

I totally agree with you. You are going to see lower prices on cars this year.
Rick, or anyone going to Barrett Jackson/Scottsdale....I need a 68 Corvette spotter that can get vins and car info....Any chance anyone going?
Ebay is very cheap advertising that is correct...However last year was a hard lesson for many. No reserve means its sold, however hard they work it. They make money regardless, and only certain cars are like lotto for the owners. Last night on the last year rerun saw a perfect 435 67 coupe red/black "sell" for 95K. Oh the owner lost the car and got 95 minus his fees...but he probably felt like he gave it away. A dangerous place, and most sellers lost last year.
