how much is too much cab noise (not talking about exaust, I threw that one out the window long ago) im talking about the squeeking, some from the engine and some from various areas arround the cab itself? when I hit bump/put hole in the road there are a couple louder, high piched squeeks comming from somwhere high on the passenger side, should I be worried about these squeeks?
If the noise is up high it sounds like it's the t top take the tops out and try again. If it is the tops you could try some silcone spray on the weather stripping.
I have the squeeks too. They do annoy me, but it goes with the territory, or is that a lame excuse? I think mine might be the body mount bushings. A 37 year car will likely have HARD rubber bushings. I have have a few new poly ones on the suspension. Someday I'll lift the body and replace them. I hope then, most of the squeeks will go away. Good tip on the t tops!
Squeeks are not usually "damaging". They are usually something relatively "soft" rubbing on something else. Examples: weatherstriping, vinyl interior panels, seat surfaces.... These can be difficult to diagnose, but I will offer some ideas. Get a spray can of silicone lubricant. Spray some in a shop towel and select a weatherstrip area...right T-top, for example. Remove the T-top and wipe the weatherstripping down with the silicone. Reinstall T-top and drive over some bumps that always cause the squeeking. If it doesn't squeek, you found your problem; if it does, you know that the right T-top is NOT the problem. Keep working one area at a time till you find it. For interior pieces, put some silicone in some tight areas (i.e. door panel to dash panel, etc.) and try again. Good luck on your search.
I just finished an interior re-do. I started with a very clean, bare fiberglass floor. I put DynaMat Xtreme from the firewall all the way back to the storage area, and on the underside of the storage area as well. My biggest noises are the t-tops squeaking, and the damn horn button rattle. That's pretty good for a 39 year old car.
I have squeaks in the winter that I don't have in the summer too! I think one on the pass. side is the rocker panel trim, don't think either are screwed on that well. And of course, the T-tops, which I will try silicon on as suggested. Thanks.
i heard the squeaking and I guess my overactive mind though it was rust somewhere close to extreme right T-top area, ill try the spray before the next time I drive it (probably in the spring, crappy MO winters) thanks guys!

The T-tops are notorious for causing rattles and squeeks. I wrap the two bars that fit into the center rail with a thin layer of tin foil to make them fit more tightly. It works. It's a little "Bubba-esque" but nobody sees it and it stops the rattle.
