Is there anything in the VIN that identifies whether a car was equipped with an automatic or manual trans in the early 70's?

Nope...starting in '72 the VIN had an engine code, but no C3 had a transmission code in the VIN.

If you have the original block in the car the number stamped on the deck will tell you whether it was mated to a stick or auto.

The only indication would be a removable transmission crossmember. The manuals were welded in place. Auto's were bolted in place. unless it's had a frame swap once?
