You're the second person who has said that, and I always thought that too, but I've found a few sources that said that it was available. Here is another site that shows it as an option in addition to the one I posted yesterday:

http://usedcorvettesforsale.com/1971.shtml

This sort of thing is exactly why I started this little project - some sources say it was available, some say it wasn't. How can I confirm for sure which is right?

Got it, the site has been updated. Thanks!

I've also broken down the body types (coupe/vert) by production numbers, and added VIN ranges for up to 1994 so far.

Default Some more updates

Ok, some more updates to www.corvettelink.com today:

Added options & production numbers:
ie; 1968, Leather Upgrade, $79, applied to 2,479 vehicles

Added production numbers for colors:
ie; British Green Metallic, 4,779 cars produced with this color

Added links to non-OEM Paint manufacturers websites

Added VIN ranges for all years

Broke down production numbers by Convertible & Coupe (ie; 18,630 vert, 9,936 coupe, instead of just showing 28,566 as number produced)

My source for the production/colors is incomplete though, I'm missing all information for 69,70,73, and 74, and a couple of unknowns for other years. Does anyone know of another source for production numbers based on exterior color that I could reference to complete my database?

Ron,
Sorry, but no 350/370 in 1971. That was a wonderful engine but it was gone for 71.

CGZ 350/330 4 speed
CGY 350/330 Heavy Duty 4 Speed Transmission (ZR1)

Regards,
Alan

PS: This information is from the NCRS 1970-1972 Corvette Technical Infomation Manual & Judging Guide, Fourth Edition. If there was some doubt it would be noted. The LT1 engine is such a fabulous STOCK small block that it has been looked a from every angle over the last 35 years. The change from 70 to 71 LT1 engines had to do with EPA regulations, so GM would have been foolish (breaking the law) to let some 70 spec engnes be installed in 71 VIN cars.

If NCRS says no 370 HP's in 71, that's good enough for me. Thanks for the clarification, I've taken it off of the site. I wonder why so many sources had that listed as an option.

Ron R,

That site you posted for the 1971 model year shows serial vin listings for 1970! You wanted to know how to confirm the information I provided earlier? How about an original 1971 Corvette Order Form dealers copy dated 4/70 which only lists only ZQ3, LT-1, LS5 & LS6 as available under Power Teams. I also have a revised 1971 Corvette Order Form dealer copy dated 7/70 that again makes a few subtle changes but lists the exact same power team options. I also have a 1971 Dealer Sales Album that includes the full lineup of Chevrolet models including Corvette with again only 4 engines available, none of which are a 350cid/370hp rating.
These are all GM documents to their Chevrolet sales staff. Hope this clarifies it for you.

No way did they beat Ron to the punch. Web-cars has the usually fluff stuff - too general. Ron's site has MUCH more information.

Excellent start, Ron. Best site of its kind already.

How about if those of us with factory colors send you close-up color shots? Would you still need permission to post pictures of our cars? My '80 is PPG 3235 - equivalent to Code 28 Dark Blue Metalic. I am sure there are lots of other CFers who could contribute. You should best set some standards for pics such as lighting and patch snapped. The hood (flattest) in full sun, for example.

Ok, I'm kind of stuck here, and if I can get past it I think you guys will like this latest addition:

I've added a VIN decoder. You type in a complete VIN, it breaks it down and tells you whatever it can determine from the number.

http://www.corvettelink.com/vindecoder.asp

I'm having some trouble with the 1980's though, since there were two sets of VINS available and I can't seem to find any guides to breaking down both types. Just pulling some random VINS off of eBay to test produced some odd results - however I did catch one guy trying to pawn off a 1979 L48 as an L82, ha!

Anyway here's whats weird. This VIN: 1z876as435090 is a 13-digit VIN from a 1980 L-82 on ebay and works just fine. However I've also seen a couple of these 12-digit numbers:

1G1AY8765BS4

The 1G makes me think it's starting off as a 1981+ code, even though it's an 80 and is less than 17 digits. Can anyone shed some light on this for me so I can figure out how to decode this?

As for everyone else, play with the VIN decoder and see how it works for you, I haven't linked it to the main site yet so the only way to get there is the link above until I'm confident that it's working. Anybody 1953 to 1979 should be working OK, I haven't coded higher than that yet until I get past this 1980 short vin/long vin bug.

What, the decoder? I wrote what's there so far in about 8 hours, but to be fair I was a programmer for about 10 years so the "knowing how to do it" part was already covered. Just needed to find all of the data and write a program that can interpret it.

It's getting there, I hope to have the 1980 thing sorted out tomorrow, but if not I'll finish up the rest of the years and get the 1998+ engine types correct. I'm not like some of the members here who have memorized all of the interior/exterior/engine combinations and can rattle it off like Rainman when you throw a year at em, so I still have to look a lot of this stuff up, but every little bit of info from all of you guys helps and is much appreciated.

One other question, would there be any interest in a pocket version of this info for PDA's and Smart phones?

I know more than once I've been at a show and wanted to look up the VIN of a car for sale to see how everything checked out.
