Added the Italian leather boot that RedLine company sells here on the Forum, plus painted the thing, all new parts and an ashtray lid my buddy painted for me back in 1979 (I know, its not stock but its kinda cool )... Hardest part was finding thin enough masking tape to get the chrome edges right!
Thanks. I originally bought a correct '69 rubber boot, but the fact is, they are so ugly and with the airbrushed ashtray lid there didn't seem to be any reason to not use the nice leather boot. I like the plain one in this application, and it will look nice with the new leather seats.
I sanded off most off the old black but I did not use any primer. Just light coats of Tempo Professional Choice Semi Gloss black. I tried a couple of semi/flat colors from the hardware store and I did not like the finish. I bought this at an automotive paint store and they said it was the right finish. I like it.
The auto paint store was the only place I could get the very thin mask tape for the trim, too. Most of the outside edging was maskable but I still needed to detail the curves and the lettering over the fiberoptic lenses with the old fingernail trick.

PS, forgot to add... I did paint the thin trim area around the ashtray door, heater control opening and the shifter pattern plate as well as the inside section of the boot area flat black, for the slight contrast to the semi-gloss black on top. It looks nice in person if you are a psycho with OCD like me.

FYI: An old timer gave me a tip to apply a thin film of vaseline are parts that are difficult to mask. When the paint is fully dry all you do is wipe the vaseline.
Wait just a minute ... Vettebuyer5869 is advocating something that isn't factory-correct? I believe the temperature in hell just dropped about 500 degrees, cats and dogs are now living together, and Dick Cheney just got a valentines day card from Nancy Pelosi.

I've seen those Redline boots advertised here for some time. I never really even gave them a second look. That thing looks really good in that console.
What paint did you use for the trim? I remember several years ago the 2nd gen Camaro guys used silver model paint. I've got a small jar in the basement to do mine with, but have never gotten around to it.

The boot looks very rich in person. Smells good, too.
The trim (I assume you mean the silver) isn't painted. The console is bright polished underneath. I very carefully masked the edge areas with fine masking tape before the black painting and detailed the tiny places with an Exacto knife or a fingernail. A previous poster mentioned the Vaseline trick, but Im more comfortable with this method.
nice job . I agree about the rubber boot on the 69s. Just looked at mine tonight, it might have to go...........
Hey... cudos to this guy who sent me his old boot on his own dime(after I threw mine away) so I could use the "collar" to install the leather one. Thanks again Craig!
Vettebuyer5869:
I tell you my trick to paint parts with chrome edges.
First put masking tape on the paint area put carefully some light grize or oil on the chrome take out the masking tape and after you painting the part the paint go out easy where the chrome was painted.
