I have finally acquired my dated smog pump (A.I.R.) system. Anyone have I good sourse for restoring this epensive set up? Thanks! Muddy
Muddy, Having done one, I would strongly advise, If it ain't broke, don't fix it. Unless you have alot more $$$ burning a whole in your pocket. Take a look at my pictures in the other thread and just re-pack the bearings. The front bearing is sealed so you can't do anything with it. If it turns freely leave it alone.
I recently had my 75 Smog pump rebuilt by Bill Hodel out of OHio. He was recommended by John Pirkle. He'll do a great job for you. He also has extra date coded stuff. He can be reached at 330-832-0871

This is the setup Bill did for my 72 LT-1. Like brandy new.
i'm going to be in the same situation soon with my 69. a friend of mine just rebuilt his date coded for his 69 and he picked up a rebuilt pump from napa for $80 (i think) and pulled the guts out to restore his unit. said that it was easy and i plan to try this approach. i'm watching the responses to this thread - good luck

Bull: Thanks! I haven't pulled the unit apart yet... it does sound ok when you turn the unit by hand. Sounds like a plan in regards to packing the bearing. Ummmm, too bad you can't pack both bearings. Wonder if it's possible to tap a tempory grease fitting into the sealed bearing then remove??? BTW great pic's!!! Needless to say, didn't see the Vettebuys thread...looks like we both finally scored as we were both looking for our A.I.R.'s.
78 Vette-SA: Very nice looking orginal set-up Are you NCRS? Would love to see some more pic's What did Bill run you... if I may ask? TY
GOLDEN65CPE: Thanks for the number and info...if I may ask...who is John Pirkle? Ty

Bob, can the fan be replaced without disassembly of the case?

Yeah, we were talking about it at the same time. I think you went a little more correct route if I remember right. Mine looks right but dated a little late, I'm not very happy with my seller, but that's how it goes sometimes. If I had a chance to do it over I'd have bought a complete, cosmetically finished correct unit and spent the $$ all up front, from a different source.
At the time, it was around $1500 shipped but I had no core. This was all outright right down to the hoses, air tubes, check valves, and clamps.
I am an NCRS member although I did not have the 72 judged. Actually I just sold the 72 to a friend of mine. I have done two frame offs on 63 Fuelies Convertibles in the last two years and was lucky in that both cars top-flighted the first time out. I also like to make cars very incorrect. I enjoy both aspects. (See sig).
John Pirkle is the go-to guy for Alternators, Starters, Horn Relays, Voltage Regulators, and other electrical components when you are going to have the car judged. All his parts are correct in every way and I've purchased many items from him the last few years. He has quite a backlog and waiting period though but some things he can turn around pretty quick. He also has many cores in case you don't have the original to start with. Same for Bill Hodell on the Smog parts.

Great idea! I take it no springs or things that pop out once guts are removed?

I bought an AIR pump on ebay and tried to take it apart--no luck. Sent it to Bill Hodel--does a great job. Cost to rebuild the pump was around $250. The really expensive part is the diverter valve--will cost you about $575 if you have to buy one that is already rebuilt. Just put the whole system in my 1971--bought some parts on ebay and the rest from Bill--he will also answer any questions you might have. Billhodel@sbcglobal.net
You've been given the names of two of the best suppliers/restorers in the hobby.
I've done business with Bill Hodel for many years... Bought complete systems and had my own restored. Always clear about what parts I want (restored original or reproduction) and what it is going to cost. He's not inexpensive, but in Bill's case, you definitely get what you pay for. I wouldn't consider using anyone else for A.I.R. restoration.
I met John Pirkle and his son, John Jr., through the NCRS probably ten years ago. Like Bill, they are honest, knowledgable, and take great pride in their work... And it shows. They restore alternators, starters, and relays (and probably a few other items that I'm forgetting). All first rate work. They can also supply cores in many cases including some of the very hard to find units. They get all my alternators and starters when I do a restoration.
Vendors in the Corvette hobby don't get any better than these guys.

They are... I can say without reservation that these are stand up guys in our hobby. Not always inexpensive, but honest, knowledgable, and very easy to work with.
I honestly wouldn't know where to turn if these guys ever decided to call it quits.

No, not working on it, but not getting tired of it either.
I've been a bit distracted from Corvette restoration for the past year or so... Got married, sold the house where my photos in my sig were taken, moved all of my "stuff" (and there was a lot of it) to wife's house, etc. Very little time to work on cars until now.
I'm in the process of building a new garage. Once that is up, I will have a place to start the restoration on the LS-6 and I will definitely be doing just that.
