VIN numbers. 13digits or 17digits ?
Gents ....
Always thought that V.I.N numbers were composed of 17 numbers.
In the process of buying a 1980 vette and VIN has 13digits !
Vehicle will be transported over to Canada....
The vette is properly registered. (plated and TITLE)
If authorities come across this discrepency at the U.S / Canada border, will they seize to further investigate ?
In Canada, any officer who suspects that the VIN was tampered with, he can seize the vehicle for further investigation.
Anyone outhere that can help me with this ?
Anyone else with 13 digits VIN numbers that can add some input ?
Phil

"(since the 17-digit VIN wasn't mandatory until 1981, and the "A" or zero was in the manufacturer's pre-1981 placement in the VIN)"

GM began coding the vin numbers in 1976 to reveal vehicle content. Prior to that you could only tell year make model and serial #. In 1976 it changed as follows:
1-Make (chev-1)
2-model(corvette Z)
3&4-body type
5-engine code
6-year
7-plant code
8thru13-production sequence
1981 and later
1,2&3-devision
4-restraint system
5-model
6&7-body type
8-engine code
9-check digit
10-year
11-plant code
13 thru 17-production sequence
