IF YOU GUYS HAVE BEEN READING MY POST ON PROBLEM I WAS HAVING WITH SPARK PLUGS i finnally found out why stock plugs wouldnt fit. my heads are from probably a 68 BB. i have a 454 in my 72. threads start further in head so thats why my car had longer plug threads. question is does this hurt value and performance and if so how much. on my other thread someone said it will actually give more hp due to smaller chambers. also why would someone change heads. thanks, nutsy.
As far as hurting value, it depends what you paid. If you paid a premium for all original, maybe, if not then who cares.
As far as performance, you probably have higher compression so performance should be better.
As long as it runs well. Enjoy it and don't worry too much about the value
hi dan. well i was told it was original motor which block, intake manifold ,exhaust manifolds trans are. but i couldnt check heads because #s are under valve cover. its a 72 454 auto that is near perfect inside outside and underneath. i paid 30k. what do you guys think?
Ouch, how long ago did you purchase the car? I would think if it's less than a year you should go back to the seller and say, "hey!" Not sure if it's worth speaking w an attorney though.
Remember, the only true numbers matching (uh-oh, if you read the thread about this some months ago) on a C3 are the VIN, the engine pad, the tranny if manual, and the frame. All others are merely date coded to coincide w the build date. If it's important to you, go find the correct heads.

P.S. My 72 LS5 is also the TH400 trans. These cars, altho sometimes dissed for not having 4 speed, are actually a blast to drive.
RICK, I PURSHASED THE CAR 6 MONTHS AGO. i dont think previouse owner even knew because he had car around 4 years and plugs had to be 10 years old by the looks of them.
I'd just go with the flow. Having a BB is very cool by itself. I'd also double check the plug. It may be that '68 used a gasket seat plug and you're putting taper seat plugs in. My aluminum heads use gasket seat, 14mm thread, 3/4 reach plugs. I finally found plugs that have a 5/8 hex so I can change them. 13/16 hex and 2-1/8 primary tube headers don't mix too well.

you are correct tim, it takes a gasket seated plug, not beveled.
Nutsy, I ran into a similar problem on my '69. Fortunately the only difference in my case was a beveled sparkplug hole. I worried about it affecting the value for a little while as it is a #'s match '69. But as we all have seen on here 1,000 times, #'s matching & value means 1,000 different things to 1,000 diferent people.
So I decided to enjoy the ride, and let my kids worry about the value after they pry my cold, dead fingers from the steering wheel !
I posted link to my thread for some other perspectives on the subject. Hope it works...my first time at a thread link. Good Luck!
