Wiseman, we caravan from Glen Allen area every year, no trailers. You should drive yours up there. One guy in our group has even driven his 14000 mile all original 57 fuelie more than once in the past few years. Until this year my 79 has always been the newest car in the caravan.

I usually drive up Friday morning. Leave the Richmond, VA about 3:30 AM and get to Carlisle about 7:30. Leave the show around 6:00 PM and drive home. I have my 25 year old son along to help drive and look for parts. Last year the 12 year old son also went - it was a long and hot day for him especially.

Have also driven up on Thursday and looked around the fairgrounds while the vendors were setting up. Bought some things Thursday and stayed overnight that one time.

A few of us stay in Shippensburg and register for the following year as we check out. IMO the suggestion about getting on waiting lists gives you a more positive chance of finding a room than if you wait until the last minute hoping for a cancellation.

We all enjoy getting together with friends during and after the show each day, then breakfast before the early morning convoy (we like that 30-minute commute) to get pumped up for the day ahead. This is one of the greatest shows in the country and hard to see it all in 3 1/2 days.

Hope you find a room...it's worth the trip.

Most Carlisle hotels I've used don't let you make a new reservation until January 1 for the following year.

For the All-GM Nationals last year, I easily found a room a week before the event just one turnpike exit (10 miles) to the east for a lot less money. Do a www.sidestep.com search with a radius of appx. 20 miles from Carlisle. You should be able to find something.

There are also some good shortcuts to stay out of the main entrance traffic backups from the Turnpike. Afer the first year I went (1998, idling for an hour in a scorching hot '72 LT-1), I've never sat in traffic again.

Try Mechanicsburg. A straight shot down Rt. 11 towards the Turnpike entrance. It's a great ride with a bunch of Vettes.
