In the early 70's, at least through 72 the latch bases on the firewall and the latches on the hood were plated very dark gray (some say black) phosphate. A very dark finish with a little sparkle in it, in the sun light. I believe the process was called 'Parkerizing'. The pop-up parts were not phosphated but had some natural finish parts and some cadmium plated parts.
