December 1953: Corvette production moves from the Flint, Michigan assembly plant to a General Motors Assembly Division plant on Union boulevard, in St. Louis, Missouri.
It was at the corner of Natural Bridge Avenue and Union Blvd and was part of a larger GM complex there. I went there about 10 years ago and although you can still recognize parts of the other buildings from old pictures, don't think anything from the actual Corvette plant remains. Also don't remember seeing anything that looked like GM had any operations there at all, so think they may have sold all of the property and buildings, one of the buildings I think was a Smurfit-Stone plastics plant or warehouse.
The Corvette building is long gone, and the neighborhood at Union and Natural Bridge isn't great. During daylight hours, I wouldn't worry too much - I used to drive my 77 through there on the way to work fairly often if I-70 was backed up.
What is really cool is that my 79 was made just 11.3 miles from my boyhood home in Webster Groves. I should see if I can find the actual build date and then try to figure out what I was doing that day. I was probably in 2nd grade... Cool!
Dad used to drive by that plant all the time way back when!
Thank you all for your answers. Now that the weather is decent here in northeast Mo, I've been thinking about taking a road trip to the site to celebrate my car's 30th birthday.

I think the trip to the location of the old plant, whether it is there,or not is a GREAT idea!Take the camera.Wine, and dine your car,and take her down memory lane, and she will shine for you.
Burlington John, Your avitar looks like a place on old 36 hwy just outside of Hannibal, MO. Where are you from?
I'm from Palmyra, Missouri ... the location of the photo is an old Skelly station on route W just west of Hannibal. Route W was the old US-61 before the current 4 lane was built. The station and several cabins still stand, although they have clearly seen better days.

Agreed, I think I will do that as well this summer.. Taking the Fam to Kirkwood for a few days to show them all the cool stuff in the area I used to do as a kid, Forest Park, Botanical Gardens, Zoo, Arch, etc... And now, won't my wife be pleased... a trip to the old Vette Plant where the baby was born!
