Wierd problem.......Since the weekend, when I switch on the lights and the instruments (gas, oil pressure, battery) all switch off. Any idea what could cause this?
You have a ground issue! When the headlamp circuit is lacking a ground it will seek one by what is termed back feed. The headlamps are back feeding to the center gauge circuit!
I have actually seen this happen on a car years ago that was a burned car. The car was rebuilt and the grounds on the car were corroded. When the harness ground was removed and cleaned off, the center gauge cluster started working again. We also cleaned each and every other ground we could find on the car but if I had to guess it was the main harness ground that solved the problem.
The main dash harness ground wire is located on the A pillar right at the edge of the dash pad. You might check this.
