Default Dumb question

This may be a dumb question.... but, I'm putting new carpet down in my 77 this weekend. Should I glue the foil backed cushion down and not the carpet, or do I glue both, or neither? Thanks for the help.

First off, there are no dumb questions. The only dumb question would be the question not asked.

As far as gluing, it's all up to you. I prefer to glue parts down so it's more uniform and hugs the contours. However, if installed properly glue is not NEEDED on either the heat insulation or carpet. Generally carpet sets come with heat insulation glued to the backing of the carpet.

IMO, it depends on whether the material you put down first tends to "stay put" or not. If you put a piece of the 'foil backed cushion' material on the floor pan and try to slide it, what does it do? If it stays put, you probably don't have to glue it; if it slides around, I would glue it. Keep in mind you don't have to use a permanent cement. When I put down Reflectix insulation, I used 3M spray adhesive...and I didn't use much. Just a spritz on the surface and stick the insulation down. That keeps the insulation in place quite well. So well, in fact, that I didn't need any glue on the carpeting...except for the vetical panel sections of the car.

I agree with Db, there is no stupid question. I restored my 79 a few years back and recarpeted the entire interior. I got my carpet set from Auto Custom carpets of Birmingham, AL 256-236-1118. cost 230.00 and was a custom preformed set and they fit so well I didn't need to use almost any glue except the kick panals and the console. Getting a custom fit set from a good company like Auto custom carpets saves you a lot of work, and the carpet is almost a perfect match for the original set. good luck and have a lot of patience. Measure twice and cut once. Plus try to not cut anything till your absolutly sure it needs cutting. I made this mistake by cutting the openings for the front seat frame mounts a tad too much. i applied a touch of adhesive and that fixed the mistake.

I finished doing my 76 a couple weeks ago. No glue used. The only area that seems a bit "loose" is up under the foot pedals where you don't see or touch unless you are reaching up there. Every place else fits nice and snug. I suppose there's really no harm in using that spray adhesive. I used that stuff to carpet the interior of a couple fibergalss truck toppers. Boy did that turn out nice.

I agree with all the above. When the seats are installed the carpet is pretty much in place. Good Luck
