Awesome! I really appreciate your help on this. This will help out big time.
I noticed that you live in Seattle. I used to live in Portland OR and my mom still lives in North Bend WA. How's the weather out there? Wet as usual I'm sure! Again, thanks for the input............
I'm not sure how it's funny when I'm the one asking the question here. No where in this thread have I asked for an opinion on my engine builder. Do you have a problem with me asking a simple question because I don't see the relevance of you comment either?
We all know that DB just built an engine for you and that you are now helping him install it. It would seem that he, as the engine builder would be delighted to give you personal instructions on the use of your timing light. I assume you will be using it to set the timing on your new motor, no?

Curtis74,
Weather is going to be clear and in the low to mid sixties. You know how nice it gets up here in the PNW in the spring. Last month, we had one weekend of 75* weather, the next week it was 32* and snow (I was in North Bend on that weekend), then last week it was 65* and partly sunny. Just a mixed bag all spring. I'm trying to get my car finished by this weekend (Rear suspension re-do) so I can take it out on the road on the nice days. Anyway, thanks for asking and let us know what develops.

i'm sure that if DB built the motor for him and Curtis asks for help on learning how to time it DB will help him, but in the meantime what's the problem with him trying to learn the basics beforehand.
If he gets the gist of how to do it now, than if and when DB helps him do it the first time he will have an overall better understanding of what and why they did what they did when they time it.
Whether or not DB helps him out with the timing it's good that he is asking questions and trying to learn so he knows and understands the process for himself.

I would ask your engine builder to show you the appropriate curve for his design. Any competent builder would be happy to show you and explain.
If he cannot, ask a mechanic at your local marina.
