Default shift *** hits console

I have a 1977 vette..and redoing the interior. I but back the bezel and the center console. bolted everything in place and the shifter hits the side of the console plate when putting the car in reverse. The plate stops the shifter from putting the car in reverse. Is there an adjustment on the shifter??? I do not know if the shifter hit before
I redid the interior becase it was trashed and nothing was bolted down.....Iany help will be appricated I do not know a lot about cars in general and very little about corvettes.. Could the trans be out of alignment?? HELP please

Check the transmission mount. If it's broken down or installed incorrectly it might affect the way the trans shifter interacts with the shifter plate.

I'm assuming this is a 4-speed car? Loosen up the shifter console so you can put it in reverse while jacked up so you can get under to adjust the linkage rod. You'll need to then remove the reverse rod from the trans lever (bolt) so you can rotate it. It's importatnt to not change the position of the reverse lever on the tranny since it's now in reverse. Loosen the two bolts on the rod so you can adjust the position of the shifter. I believe you'll want to screw the lever mount nut towards the front of the car which will keep the shifter from going to far forward. You may need to do this several times untill positioned properly.
Other's may chime as well or have a better method, or if it's an Auto.
Good luck, Glenn

Thanks for the suggestions.. Yes it is a 4 speed and to cleaify the shifter hits the side of the consle plate not the front. Darango suggestion about the trans mount seems like it will get me some additional space. The mount is flat and the rubber is gone.
Thanks again you have all been very helpful.

Just see if one of the local parts stores can order it for you, and compare it to the one you have. Hopefully that's the problem but you won't know until you can look at both. Good luck.
