I don't care about gas milage in the vette, except to figure out if I can get to the next gas station...
I just raise my consulting rates to cover the price of gas. I sent out notices to my customers last Novemeber that I would be tying my hourly consulting rates to the price of gas. They didn't really find that amusing. I was hoping to scare off some of them but they just bit the bullet and keep calling me back to do more work.
Jeeze you gas whiners are a bunch of babies... "Oh no, it's a dollar more than last year. Waaaah". Cry me a freakin river.

When it comes to motor swaps, tranny swaps, and the like, the cost of the motor will likely outweigh the fuel savings anyway. I mean what are you going to pick up, 2 MPG? Five? You would have to drive thousands and thousands of miles to start seeing savings.
Yep, same logic I hear when people tell me that I'd get better mileage if I sold the 84 driver and bought a econobox. The 84 gets approx 24 - 26 mpg on the highway. Econobox gets what? 30+ mpg. So five or so more MPG for how many thousands of dollars it would cost to buy the econobox? How much would I really be saving? Must be that new math or something.
Oh and I also love it when the people that are driving behemoth SUV's tell me I should get a more economical car. I ask how much they payed for "that". They say 30K. Then I ask what kind of mileage they get. I'm told 15 mpg or so. So I then tell them that I could buy 6+ of my 84 vette for what they payed, and I get 10mpg more too. I seldom get any further flack after that.

Exactly! My energy stocks and funds have risen so much over the past couple years that I probably couldn't drive enough at $10 a gallon to spend it all.
Quoting a very old saying, "When life gives you lemons, make lemonade"

This is true. A while back i got a used toyota tercel to commute with. Bought the car for $2500, put KYB struts and intrax coils on it, strut tower brace for $12 off ebay, build an intake and exhaust myself. The car gets 32 mpg and I commute to college in it now. It is pretty economical, but how many gallons would I be able to buy for the $ i spent on the car? My biggest reason for purchasing it was to keep miles and door dings off my other vehicles, mostly door dings. Incedentally, someone backed in to the front fender of my toyota, and took off. If that happened to any of my other vehicles i would be pissed, but since it's my commuter, not such a big deal. I'm not going to fix it, it would just happen again i suspect.
if its not driven much, then i dont see an economical reason to do so.. if you were driving 10k+ then you would probably see results within the first year. as far as mods go though, have you considered FI vs. Carb
you probably throw a good chunk of money at this as well, but you keep the engine, get better MPG and better performance. HORRAY FOR ALL!
Lock out the rear barrells on the carb. instant economy. Use a solinoid to unlock them- then if youi need the power- say there's a rice convention down town,, you got it on tap. use a covered swithc,, put a sticker on it that says "power".

LOL that's brilliant.
And we really don't have the right to gripe because Europeans pay (as was mentioned earlier) upwards of $8/gal.
I had an '85 firebird with the 2.8 v6 and 5 speed. I put in a 350 and th350 tranny. Went down 1 mpg. If I had put in a 200r4 I would have probably gone up in mileage. And the car was way more fun with the v8.
Just go EFI with an overdrive transmission. You can get an LT1 and 6 speed for around $1500 with the computer. You will have that much putting a 4.3 in and the LT1 will get better mileage.

Even if you could get a 4 MPG gain, which is huge, you would have to drive 28,000 miles to save $1,500 on gas.
Shelf the V8??? Might as well throw it away cuz all it will be is junk... Gas prices will not go down and will continue to rise unless we (USA) start relying on ourselves for oil. So basically what it comes down to is leave the V8 and enjoy it while you have it. Hell by the way these liberals are acting by 2020, you will not be able to drive you vette anymore because the exhaust is not as clean and pure as water.
I love driving my corvette with the top down and I am not concerned with high horsepower anyway so this has been a thought . Since the price of fuel is getting outragious, why not shelf the V8 and put a six or even a four in it during this fuel crisis and wait it out and hope things get better so you can put your original engine back in. That way you can still enjoy riding your vette and save on wear and tear on the original engine. Wa Da Ya Think ? Crazy or smart ?
OK, that's it. Hand over the keys; you are grounded.
