Maybe smart to some but crazy to me. My corvette is not my corvette without it's horsepower. I did not build my car with gas mileage in mind.
To me an "economizer" vette is a contradiction of terms at this point and time.
A corvette is a performance car and somewhere along the line it will consume a certain amount of fuel for that performance. I am all for technology that increases MPG as well as preserving performance but totaly against giving up performance to gain MPG.
I'd rather drive it less and enjoy it when I do drive it.
I love driving my corvette with the top down and I am not concerned with high horsepower anyway so this has been a thought . Since the price of fuel is getting outragious, why not shelf the V8 and put a six or even a four in it during this fuel crisis and wait it out and hope things get better so you can put your original engine back in. That way you can still enjoy riding your vette and save on wear and tear on the original engine. Wa Da Ya Think ? Crazy or smart ?
Can you imagine someone coming up to you and saying, "nice Vette, can I see under the hood?" I'd walk away from the car and never come back.
I'm sorry, but all these gas & economy related end of the world threads are getting ridiculous. If gas is too expensive for you, sell the car and buy a Camry.
One point made by the OP is legitimate, though... taking out the original engine and saving it, protecting it from wear or damage. Thats a great idea for the Corvette driver. I had a '63 roadster I took the original 327 out of, put in a GM crate motor with TPI and drove it to death. No miles on the valuable motor. Included both when it sold.
But suggestions about turning the Corvette into a Pinto because of gas prices is embarrassing to other Corvette owners.
See that ! You would still like the car and have to ask me to open the hood before you would disrespect my car, so is it really that important. Excuse me now , i'm heading down to the junkyard to buy my pinto engine.

OK, I think it's time for the Corvette Police to suspend this guy's Corvette-owning privileges.
Okay I will drop my .10 lol. I thought about all of this. I do not feel that many drive that many miles in there Corvette to justify the cost of a 5 speed for better MPG now if the reason for the 5 speed such as a TKO-600 is for better performance as well as a stronger gear box and to make the car more fun to drive then you would be on the right track. Sure you might get better MPG but that is just a small bonus where as in reality you were looking for more performance per mile when you drive. Thus is why I said maybe you will get better MPG depending on how much you like to roll through those gears lol.
