I was led to believe that the records of the build sheets were somehow lost when the st. louis plant closed. Yesterday while watching the Mecum auto auction. One of hosts stated that (To date Gm has not released build records) Does this mean that after a period of legal liability has past that they may be released or was the comment a bunch of ????
I have been hoping that this would happen for years but my guess is that for legal matters the shipper copies or whatever they have if anything will not be released. I hope I am wrong on this.
You can get a Chevrolet Vehicle Invoice document for '77 and newer I believe. These come from Allied Vaughn who is managing the documents. The cost was $50 the last time I looked. Anyone want the request form? I believe we have some members here that have purchased them successfuly before.

Some of the St. Louis cars have shipping documents available. I got mine for my 1980. The shipping document contains much the same information as the build sheet. The link below was posted on a CF thread not too long ago.

I got one for my 82 a few months ago. Was easy. They emailed AND mailed one to me. Not sure what it really adds to my car but I thought it was worth $50.

What you get from Allied Vaughn is the original dealer invoice. A few years ago GM was offering them for free and then sourced them out to Allied. I obtained one for the 79 that I had at the time and it was useful for the original dealer location and the configuration of the car at the time of build. My car was White and I found out that it was originally Silver when built. Unfortunately the information isn't available for older models. I don't remember what the cutoff year was but it's something like '77. Search the archives for Venezia and you will find the original thread.

SBR,
They exist. It's just a matter of time before the locator can take custody of them. I too am anxious for it to happen soon.
Those owners without legitimate paperwork on SHP optioned 'vettes might have something to worry about.

GM had Jim Mattison working on a project to put "something" together on this but there were some management changes at the top and this project was put on hold. It was not made public exactly what they were putting together as it was not going to be build line sheets but it was probably records from a third party supplier that still had their records. Old build sheets are gone but that does not mean all records are gone.
Will we get something? maybe. Any time soon? not likely.
I am holding my breath out for the '69 records. I would pay just about anything for docs on my Camaro. The clones are all over the place and real ones are hard to prove if you have no strong documentation.
Records like build paper sheets were not retained like computer records are today; they were maintained in mountains of file cardboard file boxes in the bowels of some unused portion of basement storage. Back in that day, GM did not consider them to have any value and would likely have been thrown away when the St. Louis factory was idled. In today's environment [you know...the one where the big company's CEO will sell their own Mother for a dime], GM would be actively marketing those records....if they had them. So my belief is that they DON'T have them--or can't locate them.
A good many build sheets for the Bowling Green built cars are available from the National Corvette Museum. These records were supposed to have been trashed at the plant, but Will Cooksey and others held on to them and donated them to the museum.
Copies of some of the dealer invoices for the 77-81 models are available from Allied-Vaughn as noted above.
Corvette enthusiasts the world over have searched for years for records on the 53-76 models. They have never turned up and are generally accepted as no where to be found. GM says they did not keep the records and that the records are not in boxes stashed away somewhere. The practice of putting a copy of the build sheet on the fuel tank did not begin until after the 1967 model run was under way. Some '67s have the stickers, earlier cars do not and none of the 53-66 cars have tank stickers.

Back in the day the assembly plant held onto build records for a specific lenght of time. A year at most then they were destroyed. The plant I worked at had a incinerator on site and that is where they went. Things are done a little diffrent today.

Stingr69,
That's exactly what I'm referring to. Jim and I spoke at length about what he found. I am hoping that the problems that need to be overcome happen sooner than later. I'm patient though.
I remember when Art tried to locate the paperwork for the Corvette line. He and Jim Perkins did their due dilligence in researching for the lost records, with little success.
However Jim M. took another route and was successful in his endeavor, however legal complications keep this information under wraps until it is sorted out & finalized.

So your saying that the records exist? And what type of legal complications?
