Let me start out by saying I do not want a quartz replacement. I just want to repair my clock without breaking it... How do I get the hands of the clock off so the face can come off? I'm going to try lubing it up so it keeps on ticking.
Hi, I fixed my clock and didnt have to remove the hands. I took it out of the dash and with a small pair of pliers opened up the two or three tabs that hold the back onto the face. I then took to back off, lubed the gears and lightly filed the points and away it went again. Hope this helps. Cheers Dave
Use watch oil and only on pivots (never on gears). Also, check the condition of the contacts for the rewind system; they are notorious for cracking and breaking off. Also, be very careful of the balance wheel and spring...it doesn't take much force to damage one beyond repair.
ZIP Products sells a repair kit for the original electro-mechanical clock; it is essentially an entire duplicate mechanism with instructions on how to repair it. You need to tell them the number of teeth on a particular gear to get the correct repair kit. I rebuilt mine about 2 years ago and haven't had any trouble with it since.
DO NOT USE ANY OIL. you dont see a watch repair man use any OIL
take it to A watch Guy he has blow on power for your clock .I just took mine to my watch guy he said see all this burning black kinda stuff its where some one used oil .it will burn the coil up Possibly.
He told me he could have made that clock work for ever but it shorted out and it burnt the wire going to the coil.DO USe Any Reg OIL. it will cost you in the end. Voice of sperence!!!!!!
I agree...I fixed the clock on my 79 by filing the points and using some TV tuner contact cleaner to gently strip all of the gunk off of the works. Oil will only make it worse, in a fairly short time frame. If I remember I finished off with a very light blast of spray silicone, just to exclude moisture and keep it happy. Two years and running well.
