I was speaking to a commercial HVAC tech guy the other day who told me that there is a new type of 134 Refrigerant on the market that is supposed to safe for R12 systems and no need to retrofit. Has anyone heard of it or tried it? I asked the guy at Autozone yesterday and he hadn't heard of it - but he didn't seem too knowledgable so asking if anyone else has.
Not completely true. You can't mix R12 and R134a because of some compatability differences. You could probably completely purge an R12 system, fill it with R134a, and it might work...but not efficiently. There are conversion systems for changing R12 systems over to use R134a, and many are readily available for C3 A/C systems.

I used Freeze 12 in my R12 system without any modifications and it works great. It is compatible with the R12 oil and orifice tube.It does have propane in it. You can buy it on line at a reasonable price.

Freeze 12 is a blend of HFC-134a (80%) and HCFC-142b (20%). It is in no way compatible with R12 refregrent or oil, it is basicly a 134a refregrent.
There is not a refregrent out there that is compatible with R12. If going to another refregrent you will need to, at a minimun, completly evac the system and then refill an alternative refregrent.
One thing to keep in mind, A/C shops have seperate equipemnt for each type of refregrent that they service. Since the equipment is not cheap they will usually only have two in place. One for R12 and another for 134a. So if you are using anything else you could have a huge problem finding a place to have it serviced.
Tom... You are correct...you do not mix Freeze 12 with F12 refrigerant. You completely evacuate the system, them charge with Freeze 12. However, Freeze 12 claims to be compatible with F12 oil. I have been using it in my 79 F12 system with F12 oil for 3 years and it has been working extremely well. See the website below.
