sideview mirror fix
Anybody bookmarked the step by step with pics repair for a loose side mirror? Seems like I saw it 6 months or so ago, but a search of the forum and archives came up empty.
Looked like an easy fix for a loose mirror, and I'm visual so I need the pics! LOL.

I remember that also but do not remember the details. I believe the bottom line was that the allen screw was too long and had to be ground down or something to that effect. I'd like to see it again too.

There's also t'other way.
Drill out 1 or both rivets.
Put the metal plate back on.
Put on washer that the drilled out post fits thru.
Run a small self tapping screw down into the post.
The screw pushes down on the washer.
Washer pushes down on the plate.
And the plate..... well, you know.....
With a washer with an ID wider than the post, it is possible to crank down on the screw so it's VERY tight. Might locktite the threads if you're paranoid.....
Drill out 1 or both rivets.

Easiest way is to soak the mirror in gasoline overnight. That will break down the RTV adhesive on the mirror and allow it to come out without damage. Be careful not to scratch/damage the back face of the mirror glass. To tighten it up, make some thin sheet metal shims in a "U" shape that will be slid under both rivet heads. If you make them too thick, you'll just break off the rivets [not good]. Try some paper shims to see how much clearance is there to begin with. One sheet of paper is about .003" thick. Make the shim about .003-.005" thicker than what paper you can get to fit in the 'gaps'. Once shimmed, get some RTV and put 4 spots on the support posts in the mirror head. Then place the mirror face-down onto a flat object (which is only on the mirror face and covers the support post area) so that the mirror doesn't get warped while the RTV cures. Should be good to go for another 20 years.
