I've asked this question before with little sucess. My windshield VIN tag on my 68 is about 1/4 missing due to rust. Does anyone know how I can get a replacement windshield VIN plate for the pillar? Thanks
Call your local BMV site. They have procedures for duplicating or converting VIN numbers on a vehicle.
Probably mean "DMV" site, or your Secretary of State. This is the route you need to take when replacing a VIN tag. The actual tag is the least of your concerns. If you do something against the law, you could lose the car altogether.

There is a guy in Houston, TX who makes them, and is approved to do so. My source for his phone number is not available this afternoon, but I can get it for you soon. I am sure you will have to provide appropriate documentation, and may need to work through someone with a dealer's license, but he can clarify for you. Please send me a PM so I will remember to get this for you. Thanks.

Approved by whom? Go very slowly here. In most states, no alterations to the VIN plate is allowed. Check with your DMV before you get in over your head.
I agree with Mike and if calling the DMV, do so anonomyously. VIN plate tampering, removing, replacing, etc. is illegal in most states and if you get the DMV involved, you may end up with a state issued VIN and that would hurt your car's value.
Well I am a ncrs member and if you would like I'll ask there and see what comes up. I'm sure this has been asked before. My car has been restored but I can tell you the worst part of the car is the vin plate tag. the pillar underneath has been replaced so what are the laws concerning this?

I can't be the only one with a rusted vin tag. There has to be someone I could call. My vin shows most of the digits except the first 3 or so. Any other inputs?

I wouldn't have thought it could rust out. I was always under the impression that they were aluminium or stainless.
Pretty hefty fines/penalties for tampering with them regardless!
There appears to be a lot of hysteria surrounding this, it is completely legal.

I wonder how many new or used left hand windshield posts are sold by vendors as they are easy to find if yours is rusted out. If must be magic that VIN ends up on the new post and everyone gives the BMV a call when they do it. Yea Right
I never had a car with this problem as I check for rust in the windshield frame before I buy.

I checked out that site - those are all trim tags, and data plates - no VIN plates.
The OP wants to replace the VIN plate - that's the plate with only the VIN on it, that is requred by law to be visable from outside the car. It's the only one on the car that the DMV's care about.

I know what the VIN tag is, and I know that Backeast can reproduce them with proper documentation. My understanding is that it is an acceptable procedure in any state, when used for a damaged VIN tag.
It's OK for everyone to tell the OP that he has no legal options...I just don't agree.
