How would one go about doing this? I may be purchasing a C3 off a guy in MA in a few days and I live in NY. As far as I'm aware there is no "in-transit" registration for Massachusets which makes legally driving it back one hell of a task. Anyone have tips?
Well NY has a From NY -> any other state in transit registration and they detail it on their website but there is no mention on MA's DMV about such a thing which puts a damper on the situation.

Mass doesn't make it easy on you. You really have to register and insure the car and get your NY plates on it to drive it in Ma unless you have a friend with a dealer or repair plate.
Just use a N.Y. license plate off another car to transport it home. Make sure you call your insurance company and tell them what you are doing. Make sure that they will cover your new purchase on the trip back. If you get stopped for some reason, you have the title (or sales paperwork) to show that it is a new purchase.
It sounds like the car is not currently registered in MA now..?? (up to date )
Here ( OK ) I don't beleive it would be an issue to buy a vehicle that has an up to date registration in another state, driven home then transfered and registered.
