The rule I was always taught was 3000 miles or every six months.

I tend to follow that rule unless I am breaking in an engine in which case it gets new oil at 50 miles, 500 miles, then 1000 miles, and then 3000 increments or six months.

with my track bikes i always go with a used oil analysis. I started with one type of oil and the UOA said that the 2500 mile sample I sent in was shot. I switched oils. The new 2500 mile sample was still good to go so I am leaving the current oil change in 3K and trying it again.

Only a UOA will be able to tell you if you left the oil in too long or not long enough. There is no magic number out of a crystal ball. Some people will change it early just for peace of mind and as long as they know it is for peace of mind then its no biggie. However, only a UOA will tell you for sure when it needs one.

Once a year is plenty if you're only doing 1500 miles a year. If you're in a winter climate do it before you put it away for the winter. It will be ready to go in the Spring.

Organic oils will oxidize and deteriorate just sitting in air...with NO miles on it. That is the primary reason I switched to synthetic oil. I can change it once a year (or change filter once per year and go for two years on the oil) and not really worry about the capability of the oil. That's a lot less trouble and doesn't cost any more than 3-6 month change intervals for organic oil.

October just before winter storage. The car is not started during storage so it is ready to go in the spring. About 1,500 miles later comes another October and the cycle repeats.
