I believe the 6 month window applies to the carb and distributor.
A Q-jet would have a 4 digit code, 3 #'s for the Julian date and 1 #, for the year. A Holley would a 3 digit code, 1 # for the year, 1 # for the month, and 1 # for the week.
The distributor will have a band with: 1 # for the year, a letter for the month, and 1 or 2 #'s for the day.
