Default Horn button

I have always wondered why my horn button (75 coupe) has no red on the left flag. Starting to bug me so I look in Mid America and Rockler and their replacements have red on the left flag. I have no reason to believe mine has been altered; looks intact, but boring. Anybody else have one of these or an answer?

The red paint is the first to "go" from the sun's UV rays. It was there...now it's not.

Noticed I said Rockler instead of Ecklers. Senior moment. Thanks for the insight on the UV rays. Makes sense, very interesting.
Any idea why (2) replacement buttons are available a 69-75 w/TT, the only difference being the upper corner of the checkered flag is either white or black? Mine is white.

GM supplier(s) were the cause of that. I believe the 1971's had the black/white checks reversed from other years (different vendor???, design SNAFU???). An 'adjustment' was made the following year. {There is probably some @n@l NCRS judge out there who knows about this and 'dock' points for it!}

Now I feel better, always thought something was just wrong with it and couldn't figure out why!

I haven't painted my Corvette horn button (finally found a NOS 82 ) but I've done other old badges that are much the same.

If you take the time to strip all the original colour out, just remember when you're repainting it to work "backwards". What I mean is, you'll have to do all the black squares on the flag individually but then you could paint over what would be the white squares AND the black paint you already put on there, with your white paint. Does that make sense?

If you were thinking about buying a new one anyway, then you may as well give repainting a go. It's easy to do and you can do any colours you like!

There was a period during 1975 when the Cold War with the Soviet Union had really heated up. Dick Cheney, then Director of the CIA ,decreed that no Red Flags of any sort could be displayed in the United States. After a little while things cooled off and Corvettes got the red flag back.

Alan

Alsn.... Is that just an "old wive's tale" or do you have some real documentation on that. That's just too weird to believe....[scary weird].
