Default One Nut?

Hey I am just curious. I am not having any problems! Just a normal question.

I replaced my brakes about a month ago. I had to drill out the rivits to get my new rotors on.(I made sure everything was aligned and working properly) I noticed when I put the new bearings and shims in, that the hub holds your rotors rims and etc... is only held on by one bolt! Your retaining nut to be exact.

How in hell can the one bolt hold everything together? It seems very fishy to me when i take turns. I worry about it. Its that thing that bugs me in the back of my mind.

You did replace the cotter pin, didn't you?It is amazing though that a nut that isn't even torqued down is keeping the front wheels of millions of vehicles attached for millions of miles...

Think about turn one at Talledega 225 mph and that one retaining nut is all that keeps you off the wall. Be sure to replace the cotter key.

If this makes you nervous, think about a 64-66 with knock off wheels. How tight is tight? Didn't the Owner's Manual give a NUMBER of times to hit the knock off with the lead hammer?

Alan

Best not fly on a plane then. If you knew how many (how few) bolts hold the engines in their mounts you'd cr*p yourself.

That one nut is a "Castle Nut".

Not a Corvette, but a basic example:

Hi Mike,
Didn't a commercial air liner 'drop' an engine some years ago because of a 1 bolt failure? I kinda remember the pictures in the paper.

Alan

Alan several engines have disembarked from their pylons on 747's due to shear pin failures.

Thanks Mike...I'm flying to California on Wednesday. Now I'll be watching those engines during the whole flight.

Every car that I have ever worked on has had a single nut holding the hub on. This arrangement has been used since before cars were invented. If you own a C3 you have more things to worry about than the front axle nut. Get over it.

I've seen the wheel fall off of two different cars. Neither was because of the one spindle nut. Both of them had all five wheel lugs come off.
