It is very important that you use the procedure that is outlined in the AIM to assemble your steering column into the car. The steering column must be aligned with the steering gear input shaft. If they are not aligned correctly your flexible coupling can end up like this.

Note the severe wear on the stop pins. This was caused because the pins were always in very hard contact with the cutouts in the detachable flange.

Here is the address for a scan of the Mandatory Assembly Sequence for the steering column in the AIM book. The assembly sequence is the same for all C3s. Sorry that it is sideways.

Thank you for the info, Jim Shea!

You and Lars are the two most influential C3 guys on the Forum! I would like to buy you a brewski at Carlisle next year.

Default Thank you Jim Shea and PRNDL

Thanks to both of you for the information.

Jim, your paper was both informative and enlightening. I was an apprentice mechanic at a Chevy dealer working in the Corvette shop about the time you were at Saginaw. The flex coupler is one of those parts you know is there but is mostly forgotten about until it fails or you notice it's ready to fail. I can't remember ever changing one. It's insight but out of mind! I read and reread your paper last night and now know more about flex couplers than I ever did before.

PRNDL, thanks for the part number. I called our local Chevy dealer and they had one with some real estate (dust) on the box. I was thinking "here I go again" trying to find a 68 only part and it was way too easy!

Thanks again, this forum is invaluable.
