Hey guys, I believe I have pretty much hammered out almost everything in my 76 lt1 retrofit. My problem now is the fuel system for the fuel injection. What do I need to buy or do? Will I absolutely need an Internal Pump or can I get by using a high flowing inline external pump? What about the fuel lines? Please help.
I am doing the same swap in a 69,and haven't gotten it fired yet,but I am using a inline from a 94 Ford dually. My friend is the manager at O'riely's,and used the same setup for a LT in a old school ratrod.
Most people think Lubbock is west Texas - it doesn't get much further west in Texas than Canutillo!
I've been researching fuel injection systems for my '73 and most kits come with an inline frame mounted pump. However, most of the vendors recommend an in-tank pump for various reasons. I've heard there are retro-fit options for our tanks but I've not had time to check into it any further. I think I would prefer an in-tank pump. If you come across any good options for that, please post back.
With a '76 (actually '75-'77 tank) you have basically 3 choices. 1-inline pump. I used an '88 Ford truck external pump mounted above the rail in the back. 2-modify your sending unit to add an in-tank pump. You can buy a sending unit from a late 80s or 90s GM TBI car and morph the 2 sending units together to get the pump in-tank. Many GM cars share a common fuel pump size. Use a pump for an LT1 F-body, Vette, or Caprice. 3-custom tank from Rock Valley that has an in-tank pump. All of these options use stock fuel line. You could also use the plastic line from the donor car if you have it and find a way to connect to the tank or pump. I used forward fuel lines from a 3.1 Lumina and connected them to the stock fuel lines with hydraulic unions (DO NOT use standard brass unions, they are not rated for that pressure). I put the filter forward on the rail near the heater box. Be sure and replace any rubber fuel lines with high-pressure FI line and use the correct clamps-you can buy them at any auto parts store.
Also....don't know which route you are going, but I have a brand new Painless wiring harness for a #278 ECM,and the lookup for the 700R4.I ended up going w/the ECM I had w/the LT1,and had to get a different wiring harness for it.
