I've been reading up on sidepipes, but I need some advice... First off, where is the muffler portion? It is some type of insert or weld on section I am assuming. Also, I have a '77 with a big block, so will earlier Corvette headers made for a big block fit or will I have to do some custom bending?
What recommendations do you guys have for headers? (I was thinking Hooker Comps or something like that) I'm on a budget, so anything from free to $400 sounds about right. My engine is a mildly built 427.
Lastly, where are good dealers to get the rest of the side pipe?
oh, and any other words of wisdom would be appreciated...

Thanks a bunch!
$400 isn't going to get you very far for sidepipes. Hooker makes a sisdepipe system but it costs $1,500 or so and up depending on the finish. Factory style sidepipes are somewhat less expensive but are restrictive and will cost you some HP. The factory-style metal heat shields are very expensive and kick the price up above the Hookers. Fiberglass shields are available for less $ but they may not have the look that you want.
Factory-style sidepipes are chambered mufflers. Hooker sidepipes have different inserts available depending on how loud you want your exhaust to be. You can always build your own sidepipes out of truck exhaust tubing but your results will vary depending on your skills.
I know someone that has a set of old school Stahl's he used on his BB road race car,and the pipes, etc.I think that he still has them. The bottoms are flattened just alittle, cause these were on a race car,but if you do spirited driving, then they are going to get dinged anyways.Atleast mine do.......
I'm not trying to make any money here being the middle man,but if you are interested, then I will try to put you 2 together.
And....if/when you find a set.....get a set of Bangkok Dean's covers! We have a set here for a car I am doing for another forum member, and Dean will work w/you on designing, etc.Very nice stuff.
Thanks for the help guys! What are the different options for the inserts and what would you recommend? I have flowmaster 40 series currently, but they are a little loud for my taste. I like the magnaflow idea of relatively quiet but loud upon acceleration. Any advice on which type of inserts you guys prefer would be great.
I saw the thread on Bangkok Dean's covers awhile ago and I love the look and the options (as well as the burns on people's legs) so I am definitely going to get a pair. I don't think the girlfriend would appreciate a leg burn...
... and PM sent to vettesbydesign, your contact would be greatly appreciated.
Watch Ebay and the parts section here.
They come up all the time.
I found a set of Hooker headers brand new for about $400 and a new set of side tubes for under $220 on Ebay. There are alway used sets in decent shape for around $500. I've saw big block headers all over when I was looking for my small block set.
The deals are out there if you willing to look or maybe buy some used ones in decent shape.
