Default Mirror Replacement Question

The inside rear view mirror in my '70 has dark streaks in the mirror itself. The rest of the assembly is fine. I was wondering if anyone has replaced just the mirror (glass) portion of the assembly.

I know I can easily purchase a repop replacement unit, but I tend to first try to keep my parts as original as possible.

Thanks for your input / opinions.

I considered a repro for my 75, but the one with the map light was not available. I replaced the glass, it looks and works good.

I got mine from Zip

Hi 70,
Paragon sells mirrors they've reconditioned with new glass. Perhaps they'd sell you the glass so you could do it yourself. Worth a call?
Regards,
Alan

I can't remember ...is the glass dated? I believe the exterior rear view mirror is.

I sent the mirror from my '72 out to be re-silvered, and am glad I did. It's still the original!

I like that idea! Did you have it done locally? Can you recommended someone who provides this service? Thanks.

I had it done locally, I can try and dig up the details but I know it was close to Wichita (Kansas). I seem to remember it was about $25.00. It is getting more difficult all the time to find places that do that sort of thing.

Today I talked to a company that will re-silver my ('70) inside rear view mirror ... here's my question.

Other than warming up the rubber edging, rolling it back a little, and carefully prying off the mirror from the frame, has anyone successfully separated their mirror and frame without damaging any parts?

I've gotten one other suggestion so far, and that was to soak the assembly in mineral spirits to soften the adhesive, but I don't know if that would harm the rubber trim.

I need advice ... please help.

Dont wet the mirror with anything, but you can use a hair drier to heat up the outer edge moulding.

Seems to me that there was not that much adhesive on the back of mine when I got it to let go. Just used the flatest most flexible piece of material to slip under the mirror and it popped loose. Sorry, can't remember what exactly I used. Best of luck, let me know how it turns out. Regards.

I did mine, just soaked it in warm water, after 30+ years their is not much adhesive.....mine came out in one piece too.

I've got the same deal with my 72 mirror.

Someone sent me a contact that restored his mirror.

Robert Kauffman
755 iron stone rd.
New Cumberland, Pa. 17070

In 2001 he charged about $35 plus shipping.
I'm going to call him tomorrow about redoing my mirror.

I've got a quote to re-silver mine for $35.00 plus shipping and insurance both ways. They are going to do one more batch sometime between now and Christmas. Here's the contact information:
