krylon works good. The new stuff not so much but before they changed it you could get an automotive finish out of that stuff with a little rubbing compund!
but you may want something that can withstand a bit of heat. we've just started using castle engine paints here. they dry in an instant and are very durable as well as chemical resistant.
The original Krylon paints are still availible. You can still buy them at commercial paint outlets like Sherwin Williams. The originals are just NOT availible at retailers like K-Mart or W-Mart anymore.

...or Rustoleum satin black, color number 7777. It's the same color as good as Eastman's Chasis Black only a 1/5 the cost and probably as good as far as I can tell. And the Rustoleum holds up to the heat of an air cleaner which doesn't get that hot.
I don't believe the air cleaner was gloss. Semi-gloss may be too much gloss. Maybe somebody else will know.

It actually was gloss according to the NCRS Tech guide. The difficulty is that the reformulation of "gloss" over the decades has left a 'too glossy" paint on shelves today. The most gloss I've ever seen are those early C3 brake boosters...you can see your face in some of those finishes.
I'm tinkering with gloss, semi and satin along with the Krylon. The Rusto Satin black is a near match to the underneath side of my 78 air cleaner but its clearly not gloss. I've tried it on some other 'gloss" parts and its a nice match. i still like the Krylon and John Deere Black Blitz for 'blackout" purposes but to flat for gloss called for parts.
Today's "semi-gloss" is a better match for the original paint sheen. Semi-flat is best for trim and body surfaces; semi-gloss for components in the engine compartment.
Quanta Products ( the gas tank people) have the 'System 5 Black Paint' system.
It comes with Gloss, Semi-Gloss, Medium, Semi-Flat and Flat.
It nice to use if you're crazy enough that you need to vary the sheen on components.
