Default Egg Crates?

Why is it that I see egg crates on '70-'72 Vettes that are painted differently? I'm going to look at a '71 that looks like the entire egg crate is silver. I have read that the tips of the vertical/horizontal "vanes" will vary depending on the year but, I'm confused about the whole piece being a silver color. Could anyone explain this to me? Thanks

They came from the factory painted, with the edges showing silver. Many people, including the previous owner of my car, decide not to have them painted when they re-plate them.

Owner preference....they sure didn't come from the factory that way.

Many '70-72 C3's have been repainted. Most don't know how to repaint the 'eggcrates' correctly...or they just don't want to fool with them to do it right.

I was always under the impression that they where painted the same color as body color????
Having them replated and polished would be much more expensive than just painting them.

I believe that the 70 grills have only HORIZONTAL chromed bars. Most 71s and all 72s have HORIZONTAL and VERTICAL chromed bars. If you have the two styles together it's pretty easy to see the difference. It's not that they were just painted differently, the grills themselves were different.
Regards,
Alan

PS: Some people feel that SOME silver cars had the grills completely painted (no chrome showing), but that there were no unpainted grills.

My original '70 came from the factory with no chrome showing ... in '72, I scraped the paint off the horizontal bars because I liked that 'look'.
