Default Stingray badge?

I just painted my 76 (well actually about 2 months ago) and have been putting off putting the "Stingrays" back on. When I took them off, there were no nuts or "push on" type fasteners on the inside of the body. The badges did have the three pins (each) that go through the body. It appears they were attached using a piece of adjesive the exact size and shape of the emblem??? Is this the stock way? And if it was the right way, was it glue or a preformed two sided sticker? I was thinking about cleaning off the stuff on the backs of the emblems and carefully threading the pins to accept small nuts. Anybody have any input

There is suppose to be 3M adhesive tape on the back as well as 3 push lock caps that go over the 3 posts in the back of the badge.

Without the adhesive material, the script would vibrate and wear right through the paint eventually. From what I can tell from the A.I.M. (1971; UPC 11, A14), there were no retainers put on the backside of those pins on the script logo.
