Sorry to hear the news, Columbia SC is a nice area and not terribly far from where you are now. You could move in-state in Texas and still be further away!
What is wrong with starting your own business? You certainly won't be fired again.
Matter of fact, as a precaution, I am considering buying into a growing auto paint supply company that is looking to expand its operation. Be aggressive and think about yourself.

Assuming it makes the best sense to relocate, both on paper and in all practicality, do the math and show your wife how long she'd have to contribute her entire income to paying off the house if you don't take the deal. That ought to put the difference in terms very easily understood. Unless it's almost paid off already, I'd assume that could be a good number of years. If she gets a new job with similar pay in less time than that in Columbia, then you'll be ahead financially. FWIW, how tactfully you package it is up to you, but do bear in mind that emotions could cloud the issue. Best of luck, whatever you decide.
My heart is with you too! I myself got layed off at my job! Its been since the 11th of this month and i still cant find anything this time of year! Like Mcdonalds, Taco bell, mom and pop shops, etc!!!!
I feel ya man. And still no calls. Goodluck to all of us in this position! Its a tough time!

WOW, with your wife having a good job were she is , that makes it a tuff call to make. Would it be easy for her to find a job in Columbia, S.C. ? Is there a job market in your area for what you were doing for Pepsi ? I feel for you and your family. I hope it all works out for you guys.

Thank again guys for the support! Yes, it is a tough decision all the way around. I told her about the possible relocation, and she was very supportive. I was fortunate to be offered severence pay, and a offer to relocate and stay within the company. But, I have to admit there laying off left and right at my wifes company too! So theres a lot of pros and cons to digest. I've got 45 days to make a decision whether to stay in charlotte or relocate. I can get another job in my field I think if I stay in charlotte, but I have to think about my tenure with pepsi too!

What about a cheap apartment in Columbia & going home every weekend? You'd be close enough to get home for emergencies. Maybe just plan on making the commute on Wednesdays anyway. Don't know your situation but your wife might enjoy a quit night to herself sometimes.
i know a few people that would commute from detroit to toledo ohio...thats about 1-1.5 hours..
then you figure those that commute in nyc and take trains/buses/subways up to 2 hours a day...
maybe you can move in between each job.... it'll be a 45 minute commute each way.... rent out your house and get rent a smaller place and see how it works out...
10k's not allot fro 15 years. small potatoes. I got 30k from pac bell for 3 years and no arguments, a couple of years back. good luck , what ever you decide.
Hope things work out. My Wife was two weeks shy of 20 years with Pizza Hut at their corporate office in Dallas and was let go. They told her it wasn't personal but escorted her out of the building and wouldn't let her talk to anyone. She wasn't the only one there were people that had longer tenure than she did and were let go. These companies want you to be loyal to them but they definetely have no loyalty to you. After starting as a part-time waitress and working her way into corporate and this is how they treated her.
After reading about the way "Pizza Hut" treated your wife, I will make sure they never get any money from me again "ever".
Sorry to hear about your job loss. Remember you can't control what happened but you can control what will happen. Think about what and where you want to go make a decision and move on Best wishes.
Just be thankful that you were offered a package. Take it and move on. I work in the auto industry and am living day to day. There will be no packages for the millions of people who work in this industry when they lose their jobs.
Times are different today it used to be that loyalty to your employer paid off in the long run. Not so today you are just a number and that is it.
There are a lot of people in my industry who took transfers in the last 2 years who will be screwed if they lose their jobs. No one cares, it is every man for themselves. If they get let go they will be living in an area that they do not want to be in, away from family and friends, their spouse may have given up their job and career, in a house they purchased at the top of the market, without a job in an area where there are thousands looking for a job with the same skills and experience. All because they wanted to be loyal to their company and moved with their job.
My advice? Go be a Gamecock. Nice sunny weather in Columbia. Not far from Charlotte. Two hours from the coast. No vehicle inspection in SC, unless that has changed.
Seriously though, I had to relocate to Fayetteville, NC from Charleston, SC 14 years ago due to job loss. It's worked out fine even though I like SC better and go back a lot. Go ahead and make the move. It'll be fun and exciting. Unless you're leaving behind some hot female so she will have to go with you.

Hey bud I am really sorry to hear this. I work for one of the Banks in Charlotte and we all feel like moving targets as well. I am very surprised to hear about that plant. My dad was the plant manager there in the 80's. As a kid I used to go in with him on the weekends and wonder around for hours. I still remember how creepy that big syrup tank was right beside the filler room.
