It is a shock to suddenly lose a long held job. I got a nice letter from the company pres congratulating me on my 10 years of service. Then 3 months later they got out of the business and I was out of a job! (March 2007). Then I moved to Charlotte NC !
You have several good options. Columbia is certainly close enough for you to try the job out for a while without uprooting your wife. That would keep more options open. I don't know about giving up 15 yrs of seniority + a severance package. What would happen if the new job in Columbia SC ended in one year +- ? Would you then be let go like a brand new employee without the considerations given to someone with 15 years seniority? But you have time to think about all the options. Use it!
What about a cheap apartment in Columbia & going home every weekend? You'd be close enough to get home for emergencies. Maybe just plan on making the commute on Wednesdays anyway. Don't know your situation but your wife might enjoy a quit night to herself sometimes.
exactly what i was going to suggest, maybe even rent a room from a long time employee at the new plant.
I was laid off two weeks ago. Unfortunately it is a sign of the times. We all need to come together and show what the US of A is made of and persevere. We have men and women over seas serving our great country on all of our behalves. Good luck to you.
