This shoud probably be in the off topics but I know you guy's better! I went to work today like I have for 15yrs. and suddenly found myself without a job! Thay called a meeting with all production employees and said they were closing the plant down due to cost per case and the cost of maintaining our facility during this economic slump! After 15 yrs. of working for pepsi, I find myself the one of millions unemployed!!! They offered a very generous package, enough to pay my house off and the option of relocating to Columbia, S.C. To be honest with you, I don't know what I'll do. Thanks for letting me vent.
TImes are tough. Stay upbeat. At least your getting an option to keep a roof over you head. Dont know about the move but if it suits you....go for it. Best of luck! Everyone need to vent occasionally
Thanks guys for the upbeats, I have been in charge of 2nd shift (lead-man) for about 8 months now, and productivity has gone up about 34% at night. After they annouced the closing we all went individually into another room with HR to discuss our package deal. See looked at my name and called the vice president over the southeat division and said my name was up for relocation, based on my job performance. I agree, I was very fortunate! It was a sad day at pepsi, half the people there, work from paycheck to paycheck. When the VP was in there with me, I felt I was being interviewed all over again, and I probably was. What ever I decide, my heart goes out to those who didnt have the chance to relocate! I'm very fortunate to have the chance to move to another job, the same time I loose this one! Now, I've got to sell my wife on it! She also works, and has a very good job herself.
I wish you well and things will work out. I was in that position 8 months ago. At least they gave you a package, there will be plenty of people that will be told there is the door.
Really sorry to hear that man. I have been in those shoes.
I wish things were easier these days.
Thanks Matt, I havent checked with Coke, but I already have a job with Sundrop, or IBC (independent beverage company). You see in this line of business QC (quality control) is everything. You can run a 10,000 case run, but if the quality isnt there, you've got 10,000 cases on hold! Production and man hours are lost this is a key element in the production aspect. When the news came down people being laid off, started calling these companies to see if they were hiring, they wanted to know who were the lab techs? Because they know 15yrs. of experience is very hard to come by in the beverage industry. I think I will be o.k. whatever I decide, but my heart goes out to the men and women who maybe are less fortunate.

Sorry to hear that man. I too was let go last Friday from Saturn after putting in 12 years at the same dealer group.
Hang in there man. It will get better.
I`m sorry to hear about you being layed off...but with a buy out and a relocation package...nice
The only obstacle here, is the wifes job...she may not want to leave, but... there is opportunity, with the buy out possibly putting your financial house in order, this could be a great time for a job education program. Just another view of the situation.
Good luck to you and the family in any and all decisions you make.
hey -insertbeveragenamehere-man...... i wish you the best. you have dropped me a few pm's and wished me luck over my hard times and now it's my turn to wish you the best.
i had to relocate also and into a job that was non-architecture.
all you can do is be able to diversify yourself. once you get into the other job, learn another area in the company if you can. you could be more marketable that way in the future/etc....
good luck and hope it all works out
maybe you can buy yourself some time to head back to school for a few classes also
Sorry to hear about your predicament, before you take the relocate option verify that you will maintain your seniority and not have to start as a new hire again, or at a reduced wage benefit package. These companies are tricky that way.
I'm glad that they gave you an option to relocate. I'm not sure where their facility is in Columbia but you may consider making the drive for a while until you decide to move. I grew up in Columbia and moved to Charlotte in 1979 and made the trip home many many times, esp when my parents were ill...almost on a daily basis. The drive is boring and depending on where the plant is and where you're located its not too long of a drive...so to speak. Driving anywhere across town in Charlotte takes an hour...so driving an hour and a half to Columbia may not be too bad.
I am sorry to hear of the layoff. My company just went thru the same event and no one is ever safe.
Thanks again guys for your support, B good to hear that your on your feet again, thats great! And I have read the package and they went over it in the HR meeting. But, when you get home you really read it in detail if you know what I mean. And it stipulates: I have 45 days to decicide whether I want to relocate within the company. If I choose to relocate without taking the package severence my seniority is in tact, if I choose to sign and take my package and still move with the company I'll loose my seniority. I vote if I move, to waive my package and keep my seniority(15yrs. and 5wks vacation) The package deal is about 10,000 but thats not much money compared to being 45 and starting at the bottom all over again! Plus if I dont take the package, I still have well enough over in my savings to pay of my house which is only 12,000 deed in hand.
Hope things work out. My Wife was two weeks shy of 20 years with Pizza Hut at their corporate office in Dallas and was let go. They told her it wasn't personal but escorted her out of the building and wouldn't let her talk to anyone. She wasn't the only one there were people that had longer tenure than she did and were let go. These companies want you to be loyal to them but they definetely have no loyalty to you. After starting as a part-time waitress and working her way into corporate and this is how they treated her.
I have worked a job whee I was asked by higher management to release employees of mine, some of which were there long before me. The reason was quite simple. It was cheaper and easier to hire someone new at $8 per hour than it was to keep someone making $15 per hour just because they had been there for a decade. They were cutting payroll in half by letting go the long and well paid employees and putting all the responsibility on the new employees right off the street. They figured managers like me were already under payed and would make sure the new staff were trained to get the same job done as the former employees. Lets just say I didn't work there long after that and they found themselves without any middle management.
I feel for you. I went through 3 layoffs in a 4 year period after 911. With the current economic situation, I'm scared to death. My daughter heads to college next year!
You are very lucky they gave you the package you got. It's tough to relocate, especially with your wife's situation. I wish you the best of luck, and I pray we all are able to ride out the storm while it lasts.

I wasn't laid off, I was offered early retirement, the company came thru and told everyone over 50 they would add 5 years to my service and 5 years to my age, plus a very good buyout, enough to live on for a few years. I would collect a pension from 24+ years of service. So I took it, I now collect a pension for life at age 51...
now shopping for another job, that is different, I have had offers 1.5 hours away but that equates to an 11 hour day for 2/3 the pay.... I will find something, but I am in no hurry..
