OK, so I siphoned the gas out of the tank today, thought I would get a head start on the tank removal so I removed the spare tire holder assembly. Since things were going so smooth, I went ahead and started removing the gas tank. I got the gas tank out and sure enough, there's a pin hole in it above the support bracket on the passenger side.
So, it was definitely my gas tank that was causing the gas smell in my garage. Now I have to order my new tank and put it in.
Thanks for all of the advice.
Dave
By the way, I had already removed the build sheet from the gas tank, but when I removed the tank, I also found the original GM sticker with part #3967749 on it so I saved it along with the build sheet.

Replaced my tank in my '71 over the summer. Same thing as you, found straps saturated in gas and smell of fuel. Pulled a strap and found numerous little rust holes. May be a coincedence, but it started leaking right after I used Seafoam in the tank. It may have been sealed and the Seafoam ate through it.
I got my tank off ebay from a company that sells nothing but tanks...came real quick and it seemed to be well made. No problems thus far.
So I ordered a new gas tank from Eckler's, since I wanted to do business in my state, pay sales tax, and do my part to keep people working. I also purchased the Anti Squeak Pads for $5.39, thinking they were something special. When I opened the carton, there were 2 narrow strips of 30# roofing felt. There was a Zip Products Inc. label stapled to the 2 roofing felt strips and on top of that was the Eckler's label.
It's history now, the new tank is in and ready to go. Oh yeah, I forgot, I don't drive the car, it just sits there waiting for the new owner.
I bought the same "anti squeak" deal from Ecklers then when I went to mount the tank I couldn't find them anywhere. Good thing I had an entire anti squeak roll sitting in the corner - even had the same white stripes as the ones from Ecklers!
Yeah, I should have sold my '71 in the '70's, but the market sucked at that time for chrome bumpers, (rubber bumpers were in), so I kept it. Someone is going to get an original '71 LS5 4 speed 55,000 mile convertible from this old retired fart someday.
