Default Gas Tank

Well, it looks like it's my turn to replace the gas tank on my '71 LS5. I came home from a cruise and smelled gasoline in the garage. Any opinions or experiences as to where to purchase a new one before I order one from Eckler's?

Thanks,

Dave

I'd check out some of the other Vette parts suppliers as Ecklers is usually the high priced one.

A quick check:
ZIP=229.95
The Last Detail= 209.00
Riks=199.95
Ecklers= 233.99 On Sale today reg 259.00
Wilcox=183.99.
I guess I'd buy from Wilcox as he is the cheapest and is a major technical contributor to this Forum.

Hi Dave,
What makes you think it's the tank? There are quite a few places that can leak gas and cause a gas smell.
Regards,
Alan

Check all your rubber hoses and your hard fuel lines first. They have a tendancy to rust out ond seep fuel.

Hi Alan,

I looked underneath and I could see that the support straps were wet. I didn't see any leakage at the hoses or gauge assembly.

If it leaks at the straps it has probably rusted right through the tank. Time for a new tank.

Did you check the driver's side of the tank where the evaporative line resides? It's up high and kind of hard to see. By any chance did you fill the tank just before this problem started? There is a check valve in the evap line that has a hose going into it and a hose out to the tank. It's intended to keep fuel from flowing down the evap line but if the hose from the tank to the check valve is leaking you would see it when you have a full tank. If those hoses seem to be intact then it might be time for a new tank.

The last time I filled the tank was in 1976 I only keep about 1/4 tank of gas or less...that's probably not good for the gas tank. I'll remove the spare tire carrier next week and start looking closer to determine if it is the tank, but my gut feeling is that it needs replaced.

1/4 tank is way below where the evaporative system would come into play. I'd keep the car outside until you fix the leak.

same thing happen to the 74 LS4 I just bought, went out and filled the tank with gas, came back and smelled gas after we turned off the engine. Looked underneath, but could not see anything leaking.
BTW...great thread

great info, I have been away from C3's for so long, that I forgot half of the stuff I used to remember....I will have to check that line.
BTW, the 74 has only 10,245 original miles on it, but I know that after 34 years things do wear out, even if they are not used....
Also not trying to highjack your thread Dave, just seems that we both have the same problemthanks............Tom

I just replaced the fuel tank in my 1972. The tank looked like it had been leaking for some time. I just noticed it when I put in 5 gallons after it had been sitting for a year and i was going to fire up a new motor. Tank had a bunch of pin hole leaks from rust and I think I made them worse when I had been working on the car.

I purchased from: http://www.quantaproducts.com

They had everything. Tank and all other items purchased were well packed, priced right and shipped quick. I would buy from them again.

You may want to replace all of the hoses and sending unit since your installing a new tank. Have fun, its not a bad project.

It probably only has a few gallons in there now, so I'm going to siphon the gas out of the tank today and soak up the rest. My hand fits into the opening. I've never let it sit outside since I bought it in 1975, but I surely don't want to burn down the house.
Thanks,

Dave

Quanta makes excellent repro gas tanks as one of the earlier posters said. I have used two of their tanks and was very pleased.

As others have said, Quanta makes about the best "correct" gas tank for our Corvettes. The good news is that many of the vendors carry them. Original style tanks will have the “O.L. Anderson” logo. I would be sure to look for this on any offering.

Paragon has it for $229 which includes...
Fuel tank kit, w/correct square side indents, single evaporative emission control nipple, 24 gallon capacity. Kit includes screws, fuel sending unit locking cam, o-ring, & filler neck gasket. 1970 LT-1 w/E.E.C. 1971-72 All w/LT-1

Good luck... GUSTO
