Hi V68,
I don't think anyone has reproduced the windshild header trim You'll have to find a used one or a used one that's been restored. I'd try Wilcox, Paragon, etc..
I believe that trim piece is stainless steel that's been flash chromed.
Happy New Year!

Alan

Where did you find the large pieces across the top?

Edit>>>>The piece you are looking for (I think ) is on e-bay right now. However they are asking a ridiculous amount of money for it.

I searched when I wanted one only to discover as mentioned above they are no longer available.

Mine looked like trash but the only option I had was to work with it. I sent it to the polishers and this is what I got back.

I also send the corner mouldings to the re-chromers and they turned out pretty good too AND they are still the original to the car and not repro - which is important to a lot of people round here!

Hi

I also send the corner mouldings to the re-chromers

Where they also pitted with poudry little holes in the chrome ?
If yes, the chromer must have filled them.
I got told that this is very difficult due to pod metal rubish material.

I have a spare est of the eraly 68 corners which are pitted.
I am wondering if they can properly rechorme those, that's why I'm asking.

Happy new year. Günther

Mine had to be repaired as the chrome on them was all bubbled up and peeling back. They looked pretty crap.

They were also cracked where the screw hole is and that had to be repaired also..

Did you try e.g. Paragon and Willcox? They often have some (used) hard to find parts.

I believe the left and right front corner trim are being reproduced now, Also, there are still some service replacements around from time to time.
The problem with having the corners re-plated is that the texture on the area where the top panel reciever is, is lost.
I polished the large stainless steel trim piece and realized it had been flash chromed to match the corner pieces. I then had to find someone who would flash chrome stainless.
On coupes there are 2 more pieces of trim on the halo that need to be re-plated too. $$$$

You guy aren’t starting my 2009 off on a good foot. So the center piece is stainless that has been flash chromed? Wow this just keeps getting better. Well I guess I’m on a search for a local chromer.

I keep hoping that willcox will chime in and say "oh we have that part"

Hi T,
The problem is that few people who chrome plate will flash chrome and even fewer will plate stainless steel.
On my coupe, Librandi's did their usual beautiful job on the 4 chrome pot metal pieces. The problems started when I realized the color of the polished SS T-shaped piece didn't match the color of the chrome.
Although $$ is an issue the bigger problem is finding someone to do it.
Happy New Year
Regards,
Alan

PS: Rally wheel trim rings are flash chromed too.

Allen, I always value what you say, but just once I wish you were wrong on this one. Ok I will be searching for a chromer. My center piece isn’t too bad but the corner pieces are toast. I bought a couple off of e-bay that weren’t bad just not show quality, maybe I can send them off and get me by. I do a good bit of polishing, I may just try to polish the center piece and see what I get. I just hate to polish stainless, it takes forever. Worst case I send it to be flash chromed somewhere.

Hi T,
The center piece is easy to work on because you can get at both sides if you have a dent or pock mark that needs to come out. It polishes up beautifully once you buff all the chrome off.
You might feel it's close enough in color to the chromed pieces to stop at that point. I didn't realize I would be unhappy until I started to install the SS piece and saw it next to the chrome pieces.
Part of my problem is that I can't leave well enough alone.
Happy New Year

Alan

Thanks for your help on this. I will give the polishing a try. I’m kinda like you in the respect that I cant leave well enough alone. The car isn’t NCRS and I just go to local shows so hopefully it will be better than it is now. Did you just buff the chrome off or did you sand it off then buff?

Hi T,
I buffed the chrome off. At first I didn't know what was happening when I saw the color change. I took the piece to the platrer I've used and he was the one who realized there was chrome on the SS.
Here are a couple of pictures.
I'm sorry to V68 for stealing his thread!!!
Regards,
Alan

Is this what your looking for? I believe 69 up used screws though the piece for mounting.

I wasn't aware that the trim was flash chromed, good to know.

Yeah, I'm doing a vert conversion and got lucky on my piece. I know other guys who have searched and it's no where to be found unless you find an individual and they're outrageous.

All:

All GM stainless moldings were flash chromed.

A good buffer can make the stainless look extra good, but the original GM flash chrome had a different hue to it. Many people don’t know this and as Alan stated when you buff the moldings they will show a color change.

Personally, I would buff the moldings and use them. They are stainless steel and will retain the luster for years without any touch up. I would only flash chrome if I was going to show or judge the car to NCRS standards.

The 68 header did not have holes as DZ shows, the end moldings were different on the early cars for 68 and then the late design fit 68 Late to 77. The early 68 ends are real rare and the late ends will work just fine.

I have an extra header, early production, and the end pieces from my 68, and the header has no holes...one set is plated, the other is pitted...

The 68 header had two styles, early one that required removal of the windshield to remove and install...and later production that could be removed and installed without taking the windshield out
