Default Garage Flooring Options

I'm interested in giving the garage floor a new surface appearance. I really like the black and white checkerboard/diamond patterns that I've seen. I want something that will allow easy cleaning, and at the same time be durable.

I've heard about epoxy coating garage floors, and about how nice they are when it comes to cleaning up spills. How can I get the look of the black and white checkerboard and have the "easy cleanup" feature of an epoxy coat? Would I even need to epoxy coat?

Post any pics of your garage floor to inspire me for other alternatives and ideas.

Thanks

I put down the 12X12 peel and stick alternating black and white tiles on my garage floor. I only did 1/2 the garage that way. Where the cars are parked I did not. It looks great, is inexpensive and easy to maintain. (If you look at that TV show video of my garage that was on here a couple of weeks ago you can see it.) Good luck

I did a bunch of checking a few years back and ended up with industrial vinal tile flooring you can get at home depot or leows. It cost $0.60 a foot and is pretty easy to put down. The epoxy the average Joe uses had to many areas it could go wrong - floor prep, humidity and several said it didn't hold up to heavy use. I checked into having it done by the pros and it was very expensive. My floors are heated so there could be an extra issue I didn't want to mess with.

The vinal floor has been down for a few years with zero issues and is real easy to clean.

I used the commercial vinyl tile too. It was easy to put down. While I was doing my restoration it was a LOT of work tokeep clean. Now that I'm almost finished I'm thinking of replacing it. In a working garage I'd say it lasts about 5-7 years.
You can do a checker board but not in black and white. You could do light and dark gray for example
Here's a picture of mine. This is the condition after 12 years. The seams are dirty that's why you can see them so well.
Regards,
Alan

I must say you have a beautiful collection. Very nice video. That's what I'm looking for (checker flag pattern and colors). So, you just peal and stick. There's no need for epoxy coating then?

Alan71 - I am curious why you don't think you can do a checkered patten? Thats what I did, I just chosse a blue and green rather then black and white but they had the b+w. I bought it at Home Depot. Also, did you seal it after you put it down? Mine has been down around 3-4 years with no issues yet. I will try and post a pic later.

sorry I just reread and saw that you did say you can do a checker - will read closer next time.

Yes peel and stick. It has a strong self adhesive after you peel of the paper. I put those in about 4 years ago and they look as good as the day I put them in. I bought them cheap at one of the big box stores. Several cartons of white and several of black. I'd be surprised it I spent $200. Just make sure the floor is clean. I vacuumed before I put them down. Not one has peeled up. I shine them with mop and glow.

Another Garage thread. I used Ucoat it.

You name it, I've spilled it and it did nothing to the floor. I had brake fluid on the floor for 3 days, nothing happened no discoloration. Not cheap but very durable and easy clean up

I know it doesn't handle spills very easy but when we replaced the carpet in the house I took the old and put it down in the garage, small garage. It sure makes crawling around on the floor easier. When it gets too bad I will just roll it up and throw it out.

I plan on doing to mine what I did to my house once. Going to stain it and then put a diamond blade on a circular saw and cut lines. When I finish it'll look like tiles and grout, I like the 24"X24" look.. Pretty cheap to do and holds up well.
I'll probably carry this out of the garage and down the drive also so think I'll go for the marble look instead of checkered

Debating on trying to stain the vette emblem in the center also.

I coated my basement concrete with a secret mixture of burnt motor oil, ATF fluid, brake fluid and sweat.
Cleans up easy with an occasional splash of Corona Light!

Took years to get the formula right!

I just layed down the Quickcrete etching stain with a sealer. Will see how it holds up.

I bought the commercial tiles from Lowe's, but I went with the pure white and black that have to be glued on. I won't be doing any welding or grinding in the garage, and I will use an extra tile under the jack stands.

I am getting the red pieces to border a 16' x 10' checkerd flag, then a solid black border around the red. The black tiles were about $.35 each and the white tiles were about $.85 each. That is why I decided on the black border.

In the work shop, I will be doint an epoxy coat, so I don't have to worry about melting a tile, or staining it.

So they don't have the black and white tiles as self sticking type?

Wolverine Coatings epoxy... 100% solids... Really great stuff.

I went the VCT route in my old shop... Looked great, but you had to be very careful with it to avoid damaging the finish. Repairs were easy, but I wanted something more durable this time around and this epoxy delivers.

If you want to read about the complete installation, it can be found here:
