Default What is missing here?

There is a little over 1" hole just to the bottom left of the wiper switch on the firewall also just below the washer hose. It can be seen in this photo.

What is suspose to go here?

It had a blank plug in the hole but it was brittle and fell apart when I removed. I have seen other fire wall shots that had a grommet with a hose passing thru it.

Thanks
David

David, my 72 has a small diameter vacuum hose with a green stripe coming through a grommet in that hole. It goes into another grommet that goes into the interior just below and to the right, possibly behind the tach cable in your picture. I actually have 2 hoses going into the interior through that grommet. My car has A/C and that may be the difference.

David,
There are two holes there, the one in your pic. and the other is 90 degrees to the left. My aim book for the 72 says one is for the a/c harness and the other is for the vac. lines going to the min./max air flap in the rt. ft. fender. My 72 use's both holes because it came with a/c. If your had it blocked off it was probally blocked off because of no air door.

Hi David,
My car has a very nice 'dimple' at that location but no hole. I'm looking to see what option may have required a hole there.
The plug you describe sounds like the thin plastic 'car plugs' plugs that were used a few places.
Nice looking fire wall!
Regards,
Alan

Thanks , My vac hose that feeds to the heater control is in the photo just behind the tach cable attachment nut.

Thanks

Hi David,
I looked through the AIM but don't see anything that uses that hole.
I think the a/c hoses use holes in those 2 angled areas that are just to the left of the tach connection in your picture.
What sequence number is your car?
Regards,
Alan

Alan , Thanks for looking.

My AIM shoes on page that a 11/16" holes hoes here at existing dimple. But that it all I found.

My car is # 2689 Body date D30 and I beleive final assembly was 12-01. The records I have seen show 2689 is about 14 cars after last VIN for NOV.

Thanks

David

When I looked at my AIM it had them shown in two locations. The first was in the body section and it showed what type of sealer to use and it also mentioned one hole in each groment. And the other place I saw it was the option section. It was there it showed the hole in question with a vac. hose and the other hole with the a/c harness.

I would like to add, that this hole passes thru the firewall to the wiper compartment. It does not go into under dash area

Thanks for all the feed back

I believe the answer is in UPC UA 6, Sheet A 2. The wiring for the hood sensor for the alarm comes backout from behind the cowl panel through that hole.
Any sign that your car ever had an alarm system? If your car was late I'd say they were getting ready for the alarm to become standard in 72.

Alan

On my 72 LT1 car I have a dimple where your hole is. The hood alarm wire comes through a much smaller grommet right above that larger hole. Mine is an August built 72 so it was built in August of 71 and has a lot of 71 features. The wiring harness is actually a 71 harness and I do not have the seat belt reminders. I do not know what that hole can be. Does it look factory or can you tell if someone drilled it.

I was looking at the wrong hole. I think Alan is right, it's for the alarm wires going to the hood switch.

Alan, there is a hood alarm switch on top of the heater box in the picture that makes me think he has an alarm.

Although I would never use my car as a reference due to the number of Bubba fixes I have found, my alarm wire comes out the same hole as the vacuum hoses (one complete hose and one about 3 inches long and cut off) and washer hose in the top grommet.

David, the hole that I was talking about going into the firewall and then behind the dash is the one behind your tach cable. That is where the green stripped hose goes in after it comes out of the wiper cowl on my car.

That is for the 2 vacuum lines and one air line that go to the Windshield Wiper Arm Control Valve. Look under the pasenger wiper arm. You should see the valve. When you turn the wipers off, the wiper arm pushes down the plunger in the valve which then cuts the vacuum so that the wiper door closes.

Here is the valve.

Here's the firewall grommet.

Ok, just checked the AIM for 1972 and the green striped hose is for the plenum air inlet valve actuator on A/C cars.

Thanks Alan

The car does have the horn / key on back / and the plunger under the hood.

The alarm does not work.

Thanks

Smoking BBC , I know the grommet you are referring to. but that one is to the far left just behind the P/S hood latch.

Thanks

It seems that is a multi-function hole depending upon what year the car is and what options it has.

David,
I just got off my tail and went and looked at mine. It has two holes in that location. I looked at the AIM again and figured out on my 72, one is for the air flap in the rt. fender and the other is for the alarm switch.
Hope this helps,
Wilson
