Default Do you like fixed square head lights?

I was given the Ecklers square head light kit with plexy glass covers.

Vote on whether they look good or not. My existing pop ups work fine.

I like fixed headlights, but I prefer round over square.

I'm a bit undecided. I think that they look decent, but it seems like you see them on a lot of cars that were otherwise distastefully modded. The vacuum system on mine needs to be completely re-sorted. I see myself operating them manually for quite a while.

I love the look of the LeMans style round lights with the bubbled up covers on the 68-72's.

Except for (or possibly including) the lemans style, they have "Big hair bands-1980's" written all over them.

Yes, I prefer them over the factory pop ups for the weight savings. However, it has to be on a car where weight savings is important for performance; for example I wouldn't put them on a '70 LT-1 convertible cruise mobile. On your car, yes I would.

That said, I prefer the FIA setup over the square lights. I had the Eckler's setup originally, but as soon as I found that the FIA lights were available, I sold the square lights and went with FIA.

I would sell the stock stuff for a small fortune and buy a set of Ecklers scoops used from a vette junk dealer, as they are SO unpopular, I had a set on my car from hitting a damn deer in '98 here in Florida, they are very short like a Shepard, so took out both operating systems but good.....

so I went Ecklers for a cheap fix...and rather liked them for a while, then the urge to customise them with later Camaro bulbs at 1/2 the glass height, so made my own mounts up and used once again junkyard Camaro mounting parts, and moved the lights forward, and enclosed the huge oversized gaping holes in there by about 1/2 size.....so the thing is more modern looking now,

I personally don't care for the round lights, unless they be much smaller and without bulges, that looks like some cartoon BIRD to me....course if you use smaller round bulb packs like off some new car, the holes have to be smaller too, but you still need a platform to mount the bulbs TO.....hense the Eckler's trays/sugar scoops......

another thing, is looking at most ANY newer car with damn cheep plastic over the headlights, it's all foggy looking and/or has condensate inside the thing, further making it look bad.....

You have a pampered show car, that is one thing....but if you actually DRIVE your car on the street, that's a PIA.....your choice...I like GLASS bulbs, hense the Camaro bulb solution....

another tip, take the glass from the Camaro bulbs from the junkyard, they are typically free.....25+ bux in the store.....now take a pair of gas pliars/slip joint pliars, and twist the bulb/connector outta the back, its' epoxy in there, then buy a ten buck bulb with the same connector, and RTV the thing into the glass......

Gad, I"m a cheeeeeeep bastard.....

Not for the average vette. Racers have their logical reasons, but those obviously are "average" vettes.

Is that what they call that? Tufted? I have kind of always wondered that.

When I was growing up my uncles '73 had them and being that the '73 was what got me into Vettes and cars in the first place it set up alot of my preferences. For example I like the painted fiberglass tops and the Ecklers kit just allways have, my wife loves the disco pop ups so her bubble back is going to have them with the electric conversion. Me personally I was happy when the C6 nixed the pop ups. I say get them.

I have only seen two instances of square headlights that looked good - one is in racing applications, those cars always seem to look OK with that mod, and the other was on a black car and the covers were a dark smoke gray (think limo tint). Basically it looked factory when the lights were off with the recesses covered by tinted black covers. But when the lights were on the light just shined through them. The down side was he had to drive with his brights on 100% of the time, but the look was pretty good.

Other than that exact combo, I've yet to see one that looks good. It always makes me think the owner cheaped out when one of his headlights got stuck instead of fixing it properly.

I took this pic at an Eckler's Reunion several years ago, so it's probably the kit you're talking about. Strictly a matter of taste. I thought they looked alright on this particular car.....

Coming from an owner of them and some wheel spinners knockoffs....I will be in the market for everything to replace them back to stock flip-ups.

They came on the car when I bought it so I am not the one that decided it would look good. Even though, I have had a couple people comment that they looked better, however they are not for me. Same with the wheel spinners.

I say it shouldn't matter at all what other people think. If you like them, put them in. It's your car. It needs only to please you!

I get the weight savings angle for a competition car, and I get the wrecked front end=easier way out thing.
But to convert the timeless design of a concealed headlamp system and hang them out like most every other car out there...I don't get it
