Default 1971 Wiper Problem

When I turn the wipers off the passanger side wiper doesn't seem to go down far enough the trip the interlock valve. I know you can adjust the valve--needs to come up 1/16 inch but the wiper looks like it should go down farther. Any adjustment on the wiper. Everything else works great and the drivers wiper goes all the way down to the stop. When the door comes down its hits the top of the passenger wiper. Is this normal?

Make sure your LH wiper goes completely down - if not it will prevent the RH wiper from coming down on the relay valve. Hopefully all you have to do is adjust the LH wiper further down. This worked for me. NOTE: look closely at the LH wiper it may be seated but bent up so the RH wiper does not seat. The door should not touch the wiper at all.

Hi W,
The adjustment at the wiper motor shaft determines how far down the wiper transmission shaft pulls the wiper arm. The driver's side blade rests against the stop plate first, and then the passenger's side. The adjustment procedure is on UPC 1, Sheet D6.
This picture show the adjustment at the wiper motor in the wiper well. It's those 4 nuts and 2 plates under the grill mounting bracket.
Regards,
Alan

I adjusted the the shaft as far as it would go and now my wiper door won't go down--just stays up. Whomever thought up the vacuum system for wipers and lights should be shot. Must have a vaccum leak somewhere because the relay/interlock valve worked last night. I fix one thing another stops.

Hi W,
Do you realize that in 1973 the service managers all got together and had the engineer who designed the wiper/headlight systems assasinated?
It's really neat when it works but it can drive you absolutely crazy!!!
Do you have the trouble shooting guide from Dr. R. ? It really helps.
Regards,
Alan

Pull the outer rubber bellows off the canister and make sure the seal hasn't popped off. My 72 hadn't been run in 10 years and the wiper door didn't work. I found that the seal had popped out and when I re-seated it the door worked fine. Miracles do happen.
