i know that i keep asking questions, but what is the benefit to having side pipes, besides the fact that they look cool, and they look to be an easier install, one that a guy with no welder might possibly do him self, and will the side pipes for 68 through 74 adapt easily to a 76. and if so were is the best place to buy them? to have regular exhaust ran up here in alaska is very pricey 2000$ and up, i have tru duals on the car, but they are from 76 or 77 and seem to be getting old, and it would be against the law for an exhaust shop up here to reproduce with out a catalatic converter, the emission ****'s are out of control up here, so any advice in this situation would be nice, and much appreciated.
Hi BD,
I think the first thing you need to decide is.... do you want the 69 GM look or the aftermarket/ Hooker look? And also, to be clear in your own mind why you want the change. $$$
Regards,
Alan
i am only thinking about the change because they seem like i could probably install my self, and save about 1200 in labor. i just got the car for xmas, and am in the planning stage, the first thing i want to do is headers, and with that being said, might as well do exhaust while i am at it. i realize that every thing corvette related equates to money. and although i have some money, i also have about thirty other projects going the most important would be my land in trapper creek. so i only have somuch alotted to certain projects.
lOVE THE SOUND! Bluedawg, I have the Hooker Header competition side pipes which come right off of the Header so you don't need seperate headers. My set cost around $1,200 plus $300.00 for the STS baffles. I get a lot of thumbs up as I growl by. Very easy to install if you have a set of ramps
so how hard is it to adapt them to a 76, i know that the bodys are basicaly the same, but all of the side pipe kits say for 69 to 74, and do you guys who have side pipes insulate them from the body?
I had 2 sets of side pipes on my '69 vett. then went to a stock under body system to make the long trips a little more bearable from the loud exhaust sound.
I'm on the down hill side of a body off restoration and
decided to go with a set of Alan's 2.5 inch chambered under body system. I'm hoping to get the best of both worlds which is a great sound but the loudness goes out behind the car.
My first exposure to true side pipe exhaust was on my 2 yr old 70 442 olds. I can always identify my old girl fiends by that destinctive oval scar on their legs. Comes in handy at class reunions. In all honesty, The look and sound of the header/sidepipe combo can never be beat. I sold a 75 442 w/ all the trimmings in 84 to buy the Hooker headers/side pipe combo I still run. I have posted that I have had trouble with the side tubes rotting on the top. I have seen several responses to this from members of this forum. 1. proper care and maint. are paramount in the life of these units. 2. do not let them ever run for less than the amount of time it takes to warm up to op. temp.3.Do not ever ask Hooker why their product fails under the most intense and meticulas care. 4. As stated in previous posts the humidity level in ones garage which would vary by 40 points is hardly a reason for someone, who in some of the harshest conditions is a fanatic about keeping my most prized possession clean, dry and polished. I truly believe that Hooker has been less than honest with people who have spent va. ca. money Vegas money, beer money to buy the product they fail to even acknoledge may have a defect. Hooker may be the only game in town for sidepipe/header stuff for our ole vettes but They should at least have the courtesy to address an issue that seems to be common in the corvette world. Didn't mean to rain on your parade, But as much as I LOVE the sound nd looks of those units, I am sick and tired of people telling me after i spend 1700.00 on a new set, that I should look into what I'm doing to preserve the integrity of the pipes,/tubes (which I replace every 2 years cause they rot onTOP of the tube) Thats 350.00 per year . BULL.They are in my opinion the coolest thing any body can do to a 70's vette. You will never be sorry you did it. What ever engine you have, You will never be at a loss for words when someone asks you,...........Whats it like to hear that thing at 5600rs next to your ear?

The original ones were for 1969 only. I cant imagine anything you could bolt onto a '74 wouldn't fit the same on a '76, if you like that sort of thing.
The reason the sidepipes are for 68-74 is because they came from factory without cats, I have factory sidepipes on my 75 and there was no modifications what so ever. Sidepipes look and sound cool but if you do a lot of long trips they can get annoying. I drove mine to school (3 hours) and the drown right next to your ear gets old pretty quick.

They are NOT factory sidepipes for ANY C3 year other than 1969.
