Default 1968 corvette number decypher.

I need help identifing the numbers on transmission and paint codes etc...

Transmission code shows 3925660
also shows another code but couldn't quite make it out i think it is 088336

The paint trim code on the door shows to be 983 and says C-17 on door trim.

I was told that the car orig had a 427 ci motor and that the transmission is a m22 rock crusher transmission. How do I verify this? Also car is red now and looks like some paint chipped away on the inside of the door and looks to be like a very dark blue metallic or possibly a green not sure couldn't really make it out. If anyone can help me I'd greatly appreciate it.

983 is British Green in 68; C17 should be the build date.(October 17, 1967)

3925660 is the case # for M-21 and M-22 transmissions---the other # is just part of the patent number stamped in the case I think.

Only a handful of corvettes had factory M-22 Rockcrushers in them. I'm sure someone more knowledgeable than me will chime in about ID cues throughout the car. (tach redline, rad/tank setups, fuel lines, etc.) All big blocks had a rear swaybar and HD axle yokes.

hell according to this site going by the vin. Mine is both a convertible and a coupe??? weird. the first set of numbers up to the S show it to be a convertible. the numbers following that are too high to be listed as a convertible and only show as a coupe.

VIN # 194678S4021XX

don't think I should give the last 2 numbers just in case ???

I guess I should say I'm a complete idiot when it comes to the corvette. If someone is willing to graceously bestow some of their great C-3 68 knowledge I'd be greatly appreciative

Help us out by filling out your profile and give your city/state.

194678S4021XX

1 = Chev
94 = Corvette
67 = convertible (if coupe; it would have read 37 instead of 67)
8 = 1968
S = St. Louis, Mo.
4021XX = sequential numbering - and according to the site should start with 1 not 4. ie: 1021XX (can you double check your VIN?)

Yeah i guess I should do that. Texas usually messes up all my titles. Even gave me the wrong tags 2 x's on my truck

Mmmmmm, the site might be wrong. I just looked at the Black Book, and it gives the range as 194378S400001 through 194378S428566. The fourth digit, would be 3 for convertible, or 6 for a coupe as stated above. Not taking a swipe at you dannyman, it's just that these number discussions intrigue me.

Right you are!! A quick check on the search for "68 VIN" shows all VIN referenced are indeed ...S4XXXXXX. I had come to rely on that site as all correct information. :o

For the purpose of this OP question; regardless of this number, it still preceeds the actual production number for this production year.

There is no distinction between coupe or convertible consecutive unit numbers, so you cannot have a VIN "too high" to be a convertible. They were assembled in order and the only real difference in the VIN, other than the last five digits, is 67 to indicate a convertible and 37 to indicate a coupe. 194678S4XXXXX for convertibles; 194378S4XXXXX for coupes. The 4 after the S is the code for the car line series (Corvette). It varied from year to year, but all '68s, coupes and convertibles, have the 4.

Welcome to the '68 owner's club.

Well I for one would like the last couple vin digits...it would help complete my record of sorts. All corvettes sold prior to 7000 vin are pretty much all converts, the coupes did not show up until about that time, and thats not really news. 2186, 2188 (in texas) were both green cars, with 2188 possibly having a saddle interior. There are 7 cars I have as survivors in the 2100 "range". You can pm me the numbers if you want, I would appreciate it, and could always verify that you had the car for some security purposes. C 17 works for the trim code, and interestingly the block of cars has trims of C 12 and C 14 as well! A pretty wide spread, so production may have been a bit busy.

Joe, the 1968 database guy

And the last 68 was 194678S428566, a 427/400 M21 984 STD car...

appreciate it. I took some more pictures. Mine is a bit modified as it has a 73 front clip on it insstead of the 68-72. It still has the side push buttons on the door instead of the clasp downs. I'll post some more picutres.
