I've been debating whether I should put on a "correct" passenger-side mirror. Not having one is a bit of a pain, even though I always look over my shoulder to make sure nobody's there, it would be nice being able to glance over and see if there's anyone lurking.
My '69 L71 roadster is basically a stock restoration, so I know it will be out of place.
Personally I hate driving without mirrors on any vehicle, but I also hate to put a mirror on my passenger side since it doesnt belong there. I think it was a dealer installed item but I could be wrong. I have a 69 and when its done its going to be tempting to put one on the right side, but I decided against it. Just nail it and they wont be beside you anymore!!!!!
The only reason you shouldn't do it is because NCRS says that it's not a 'factory' part. So, if you want to submit the car for NCRS judging, don't do it. The rationale that it isn't 'factory' is pretty wierd IMHO, considering the part is made by the same mfgr. as the one on the left side, it matches it exactly (in reverse), and it was sold by the Chevrolet dealer along with a lot of other Chevrolet approved add-on parts.
If you aren't getting it judged [by NCRS] and drive it regularly, play it smart and safe...put the right side mirror on it.
My 69 BB came to me with a passenger side mirror. When I had it painted, I considered leaving it off for the sake of authenticity, but the safety and convenience of having a right side rear view won out. Ultimately, it seemed stupid and somewhat **** to eliminate visibility in the name of correctness. BTW, in the first week after I bought the car I was driving it around town and, after parking it, had a total stranger ask me about the passenger side rear view mirror (must have been a Vette afficianado). That was when I started to become aware that they weren't factory correct, but I don't think I'd like driving it as much without the additional mirror. Just because Chevy screwed up in 1969 by not offering a really essential piece of equipment, why should we handicap ourselves to please the NCRS?
Those chrome mirrors are a mal adjustment nitemare, not only they flop around like a limp dick, they get hit every damn time someone walks past the car, SO, mine hit the trash soon as I got the car and put later shark mirrors on...further forward where they belong....and I use DRIVER's bubbles on them....NO blind spots....convertible and all....
tell at a glance....none of that head twisting distraction crap....
oh, btw, there are two different sizes to the mirrors themselves....I had a small one on the driver's side, and a large one on the pass side...replaced them both...
I have been debating adding the passenger side mirror to mine too. I bought the mirror months ago, but just haven't been able to commit to putting it on. I don't plan on having mine judged, but like to keep it stock...tho it would be nice to have a mirror on that side of the car.
