Default Battery Mount

70 vert - was looking into installing the proper battery mounting components into my car. I was wondering what you used to connect the upper and lower battery mounts and reinforcements to support the battery (bolts and screws, rivets - how long) Thanks !

Hi M70,
Originally, the pieces for the battery hold-down were riveted to the fiberglass under-body. Those aluminium rivets, with the large flat heads, are still available and the access is good for peening the shafts. If you'd rather you can use pop-rivets which are a bit easier.
Regards,
Alan

Thanks for the response - when reinstalling the battery, do the terminals face towards the front or rear of the car - mine had the terminals facing towards the front (what is stock - correct) ?

Hi My 70,
Originally the side terminals faced towards the rear. Many get turned around because it easier to jump start or charge the battery when the terminals face forward.

Alan

I checked the assembly manual on my 69, assume the 70 would be the same. It actaully shows the terminals toward the front, with some hoses routing in from left (outside) edge of the battery box and looping around the back of the battery up to the top near the battery vents, I assume these were to vent the gases.
Negative Terminal is on the left (outside) wire goes out directly below terminal and connects to frame.
Positive routes down tunnel from starter and comes in from the tunnel side.
There are 4 components to the battery mount. There is a backup plate that mounts under car at front of battery and bracket is revited for fixed position. The back of the attery also has a support under the car that is riveted to battery box. The top rear month looks similar to a standard battery mount (single bolt) the secures battery. Found on pages 269 to 270 in assembly manual.

I think it's just the opposite Alan. My late (Nov. 1st trim tag date) '69 has the terminals to the front. It is a PITA to access the terminals because they are so close to the lip the compartment door rests on. I have found it is much easier to unclamp the battery and tip it back to get a wrench on the bolts. Attaching jumper cables is near impossible without moving the battery.

Bizzoco's 1969 Stingray Guide book says that by 1-5-70 car # 0S400079, a 1970 Corvette, had the battery rotated 180° with the terminals facing the rear. This change necessitated that the battery cables be about 13" longer, and cost Chevrolet additional $. This is a rough quote, page 150.

Hi,
From the info I have and the responses, aren't the 70's posts facing rear? The NCRS 70-72 Tech Guide, and my 71 AIM show the posts to the rear.
Regards,
Alan

Hi Pete,
Your right, I have my battery facing front BUT it's just sitting in the compartment so it's moved far enough towards the rear of the compartment to easily get the disconnect and jumpers on the posts.
