Roughly twice the ponies of the original CFI 350 on motor!. Why? Because it fit and was relatively afordable. I looked a 400+ CID small blocks but they were way more $$.
While I prefer BB, less engine weight is better for a sports car. BB was always a possibility. Forged 385 6.3 L in sig. BB power w/ SB weight.
PS Only in the U.S. is 5.7L a SB.
The 406 in my signature. I bought the 80 L82 Vette with a broken motor and I had the 406 out of a friends Vette that we built an all aluminum 427 small block for. The 406 dynoed at 550 HP and 530 Tq before I rebuilt it and hopped it up for my 80. Can't leave anything at well enough!
I replaced my L48 with a GM Crate motor 350. It had a little more hp than the L48. My L48 had 90k on it and some cylinders burning oil. So rather than rebuild, I replaced. I think I'm sorry I did.
What a Beautiful, Awesome Site this was to see all those wonderful Engine Picks. I feel bad now I only installed the 330 crate engine, I love it, but wished I had had the guts to put in the larger Horse Power, I don't drive it enough to worry about the gas mileage. Has anyone got any ideas on how to make it run faster, without blowing my billfold out. Thanks Doctorgene
Mine is a original 454 stock motor with 68k on it. I just wanted a big block bad so now I am happy! When I go through it I will upgrade a small amount, cam, headers, ignition, a little chrome, ect..
If you own a C3 your billfold is going to be "blown out" more times than not. I just dropped by block off at the machinists yesterday afternoon. Going to go with a stout 383 build for my 69. I can't wait to get the short block back and put it all together. Must have more power.
Stone stock 350 L98 TPI engine from a '90 C4. Why=low mile pullout, didn't need rebuilding. I wanted a cruiser, not a race car. If I did it again now (almost 10 yrs later) I would go with an LS, maybe a 5.3 truck engine; cheap and reliable 300hp.
The original, numbers matching 427/435...previous owner had the engine rebuilt. .030" over, L88 camshaft. It makes for one cranky engine that can snap your neck on acceleration.
look like 18% are declaring original engine.... does that sound about right?
and this is those that think it is original.. how many know absolutely for sure it is original and not just the previous owner telling them?
Interesting that your L-46 has the expansion tank, metal shroud & aluminum radiator. There's been some debate about L-46's with this set up. My original motor is gone so I'm not 100% sure if I had an L-46 originally or base 300 hp engine. My data plate has L-46 specs and looks 39 years old, but who knows for sure until I pull the tank one day.
BTW-beautiful engine bay!
Glenn
Thanks Glenn for the compliment.
I do have several items that are technically wrong in my engine bay and those of you that are NCRS members could spot them in a minute. For instance, my car does not have A/C however I have a 7 blade fan and my radiator is date coded '72 plus I've been told that it's not the correct one. To my knowledge the expansion tank is correct. All of this was in the car when I bought it 10 years ago, so I kept it the same during the restoration. After all the money I dumped in the car I decided to keep some things the way they were since I knew I'd never have the car judged and to save $$.
